Did you read the article? I'm assuming it's an "Onion" type piece:
Although his body was badly mangled and the wounds were consistent with a struggle, so far officials say they don't suspect foul play.
“Sure there were stab wounds and bruises all over the body,” admits the lead investigator on the case, “But who knows what caused them. Maybe he tripped and fell on a set of knives. Right now we’re ruling this an accidental death.
“It’s terrible when accidents like this happen. But then again, maybe Mr. Avdeyev should have thought twice before he screwed up the Olympics. Accidents tend to happen to people who betray Russia.”

Why do they need to have judges in ski jumping? Shouldn't it just be who jumps the farthest without crashing?

I don't know. Instead of distances they show five scores from judges after each jump. They seem to be on a 10 point scale.

I agree completely.
I think like you guys, it should be just based off of distance.

On a different note, these alpine skiers are fucking nuts.
The one dude hit 85 MPH on skis and most are hitting 80 MPH.
They are covering over 2 miles in 2 minutes.
They showed that the top of the mountain is basically 2 Empire State buildings in height and it drops 3500 ft from top to bottom in elevation.

The record is 100.6 mph. Which is completely insane.

Yeah. They get enough "style" points from me just for being crazy enough to do that shit.

Sorry, I put in a 2, but it is 3 empire state buildings in height.

People think it is nuts when I do 110 on my motorcycle or 135 in a car, but 85, 100 is just ridiculously insane on a set of skis.

20 feet above the ground and 120 feet in length I thought they said or something like that....so 40 yards.

The ski jump, those duded jump like 1 1/2 football fields and are hitting like 60 MPH.
Large hill competitions says the record is 246 meters or 476 feet or 158.6 yards.

These guys are jumping out of a 20-story building and flying as far down the hill as possible — 200 feet is how far they’re dropping over the course of their flight,” he says. “It’s an amazing piece of physics and an amazing bit of courage to do it well.
