Big difference between the teams I was playing on and your local bum teams. 90% of our players played college ball, about 30% had NFL experience of some level (typically practice squad guys). As for the 'don't get paid part'... that's relative to the team. Most don't, the best do. While it's not enough to live on (though a few guys tried between playing both semipro and indoor), it was enough to matter ($200 to $500 per game). What you're talking about definitely exists... I saw that my first year. But talent doesn't last long on those teams before the better teams 'recruit' them away.

Decided to look around, as I haven't talked to a lot of the guys I used to play with, since playing some flag football awhile back. This is the team that is owned by the guys I used to play for. Needless to say, they are still smashing teams. Tony used to own the Dayton Drive and had some connection with the Central Ohio Lions, who won at least 1 national championship. (that was the last I heard about him) Just skimming their roster and seeing some recognizable names, I can tell you that they have a few former NFL guys on there. Robert Redd, who ran my flag team, spent time with the Eagles, Falcons and a lot of time with NFL Europe. I think he's still playing arena ball too. But to your point, I looked up this Dayton Diesels team... which looks like it's run by a guy that was our backup RB... yeah, they are scrubs, lol. Definitely different levels of competition.
