the game is just played totally different now. teams finally came around to basic math concepts and the now almost all understand the importance of the 3. so they take more of them, game plans are revolved around spacing to get the open 3 and the corner 3. because of that you have more players on the court who can shoot 3's. cause if you can't shoot then you can't space and it all falls apart so those types of players have basically lost their jobs in the NBA unless they are absolutely elite at something else.Cnasty wrote:Have there been any discussions to move the 3 point line back in recent years?
I am far removed from the NBA for the most part but it seems these guys make 3s like jumpers now a days when it used to be a bit tougher.
Eye test though and don't know the percentages over the years.
so when you have more guys capable of hitting 3's getting minutes and game plans revolved around the 3 it creates earth shattering 3 point numbers.
in terms of moving it back, I think its eventually inevitable. or they implement a 4 pt shot. The Rockets (who are one of the most advanced in terms of analytics) already take 'deeper' 3's because the %'s from taking a deeper shot doesn't drop that drastically and the ability to get open from a deeper place on the court is easier and provides more possessions that end in a shot. so the math can work in their favor by taking 'tougher' shots.
I know this might sound crazy, but this is all correlated the anti Kobe stuff we used to talk about 10 years ago. this stuff has been in small circle of basketball dorkdom for a long time, its just now accepted and become mainstream.
