i understand there is a difference. However, to me its no different than a pitcher with pine tar on the brim of his hat or a hockey player shaving his stick down a bit more than "allowed" (if thats even a thing)

If it didn't make a difference in the game would they bother having a rule against it?

By the way, 2 PSI below what? Minimum, maximum, or average? ESPN doesn't seem to want to clarify that.

13 is the official PSI for a football I believe, that's why on ESPN when they did their "demonstration" that in my eyes does nothing for them, used 11 PSI, 13 PSI and 15 PSI. Not sure what they tried to show the public other than getting Jerome Bettis and Mark Brunell to do something in front of a camera.

So I'm confused then. You agree that the NFL has the rule in place because it can make a difference if the balls are underinflated. It's pretty clear that the only way you end up with 11 of 12 balls underinflated is you intentionally do it, therefore you are cheating. So what you're saying you don't care that the team is cheating?

1. Patriots have been inflating footballs to the minimum either on purpose or just because out of habit for years.
2. Referees have been checking balls and saying, "ALL GOOD!" and everyone moves on.
3. Balls deflate over time slightly.
4. Someone noticed in this recent game.
5. Big stink because it is the Patriots and not the Packers, Vikings, or Panthers.

1. Patriots have been inflating footballs to the minimum or right below the minimum on purpose just like Green Bay purposely overinflates them and complies with referee when they say "fix this."

I wasn't aware there are gray areas in rules that amount to making measurements.

If this was a 1 point win for the Patriots and the deciding score was a touchdown caught by an offensive lineman (where the benefit of a softer ball may be more important than with a WR) does it matter then?

Balls deflating over time wouldn't be an explanation in my opinion. I know the quality is assumed to be the best with an NFL football, but we have used Baden, Wilson and Nike footballs and when they start losing air, it isn't a slight loss, its noticeable. I know it's high school trendon, and you know more than us since you watch tv, but balls that lose air over time are not going to be used in an NFL game because they would be to worn for the QB and receivers to want the ball. I would like to know what the life of an NFL ball is. How often do they switch them out? When does a game ball no longer get submitted as a game ball? Seeit might know more about that than anyone of us.
