Getting the PS4 around Christmas, or I will wait to get it possibly in March or April when I receive my tax return. No rush to get it with three PS3s and three XBOX 360s in the house. I feel like I am wasting my systems if I buy the PS4 and XBOX One at launch.

I'll easily have enough points on my credit card for a free one when it launches, but I'm rather uncertain about buying launch again when I'm almost certain that the first iteration will have something wrong with it after 1-2 years. Can't wait that long, though, so I'll end up getting it sometime shortly after launch.

this is at least the 2nd time youve mentioned you think there will be problems initially. this isnt 2006.

I would guess with advanced technology over the past 7 years and better equipment, it'll be easier for them to fix any problems on the fly.

I know I'm old, but what were the big issues with the PS3 at launch?

Both the PS3 launch versions and the XBox launch versions had long term over heating issues. After 12-18 months of average to high duration play times, both machines experienced problems with internal heating causing circuit boards to "re-flow" and connections to be screwed up in the system rendering the systems unplayable. The PS3 had the YLOD and the XBOX had the RROD. I had launch versions of both and both ended up getting this after a period of time. The XBOX I lucked out as it was 1 month before the extended warranty was up, so I was able to get a replacement with the newer version that didn't have the same problems. The PS3 I had to fix myself on three different occasions by taking the entire damn thing apart (particularly to get the game out of it and get it back up and running to back-up the data) and eventually ended up needing to get the new slim version. So, my PS3 hardware ended up costing me $1000 since I had to buy two systems to play over the years since launch.

Problems like this are only found through thousands of hours of play time on a single system. Sony and Microsoft rush to get the systems out at the earliest possible launch date, especially when they're hemmed in by a holiday season (and there is no doubt they can't delay a launch until February and miss this Christmas).

Small problems like bugs and errors in the system functioning properly I'm confident they'll find. Long term problems like the thing overheating after 2 years of play time and not working anymore, I doubt they'll get enough stress test hours in on a single machine to know that, which is why you had YLOD and RROD last time around.

Plus, last iterations was the third system for Sony and the second for Microsoft, and they both still had problems that generation. Why would generations 4 and 3, respectively, be any different?

I believe the PS3's had the overheating issue which would result in YLOD.

I will say a $400 launch price is more palatable than the $600 for the PS3, though, and will make it easier to buy even with a suspicion that I'll have to replace it in 2-3 years.

I had the same concerns as you with the launch edition but I agree the $400 made me take the plunge.

Damn you Sony!

Totally understand what you are saying Dak.

I just don't think the problems were as frequent with the PS3 as they were the Xbox.

Also with both companies using the same chips they can basically put in double the testing time on things like heating issues.
I am sure that there will be software issues and patches coming down the pipe after launch but basic heating issues are not going to be a problem. That cell microprocessor in the PS3 was so beyond the realm of what engineers were testing at that time. Sony went a bit over board. That chip never became very popular.

there was a HUGE jump from Ps2 to Ps3.....the jump is less from 3 to 4. I mean, they are at least similar systems. I'd think they've learned how to deal with overheating issues. I mean like i said IMO the PS2 and PS3 were completely different consoles. Not so much with the 3 and 4

Xbox had already addressed overheating issues with x1. Said it will start shutting nonessential programs and functions to start cooling the system. I expect similar from ps4
