They are attacking SOPA because it exposes them and makes it easier to track down their criminal activity. Its an act of self-preservation so they can feel important.
Meanwhile, the innocent consumer is hurt by not being able to use the products they actually paid for and ends up having the cost of additional security passed on to them. Mission accomplished.
They had their shot at doing something worthwhile and helping thousands of people that suffer at the hands of dangerous organizations. Instead they backed down when the cartels threatend to hunt them down. That proves their level of conviction.
So, politicians and PSN users acting in self-preservation: good.
Anonymous doing so: bad.
Got it!
Nothing to see here, citizen!

Sony supports the federal government's desire to take another gigantic chunk out of our freedom and it is self-preservation.
PlayStation fans are mad at Anonymous for taking away their ability to play online; self-preservation.
Anonymous wants to fuck with Sony for their support of SOPA and it is self-preservation.
Assuming all of these above statements are accurate, I am on the side of the people who will cause the most good. And that is Anonymous. Biffie, me, you, sKaterDUDE67 on CoD, the NDL, etc etc aren't going to lift a goddamn fucking finger to help our cause. In fact, if you really think about it - brick by brick - the people who will be doing the LEAST damage is Anonymous. Yeah, maybe not now, but if SOPA passes, it will inconvenience everyone - and, yes, our beloved PSN - more than anything Anonymous can do.

Or, a more likely scenario...
Anonymous will lose the support of the gaming community. Sony will use the attacks as evidence that cyber terrorist can cause real damage to the economy, with the consumer being put at risk through higher cost and privacy concerns. Someone will make a connection between the attacks against Sony and our weakly guarded energy grid. The evidence will help those pushing for SOPA and the bill gets passed with full support and little legislation oversight.
There are ways to make changes and there are criminal acts. Anonymous has no idea how to enact change. People dont follow anonimity. They follow leaders.
Shutting down the PSN isnt going to gather support for SOPA, its going to strengthen the bills resolve.

Also, sony produces a product that is used by millions of customers. They are trying to protect their intellectual property, much of it that they paid to develop.
PSN users dont stand in front of the keyboard blocking anonymous from using their computers. The most they do is say annoying things on online games.
Anonymous produces nothing and has had no success in enacting any positive changes. In fact, it can be argued that they have increased the support of SOPA through their careless actions.

I understand everything you said (and it is saddening) but the "follow" part. People don't fucking follow anyone. They/we are all fat cat losers who don't give a hoot about anything until you take away
American Idol PlayStation Network. It disgusts me.

SOPA is going to pass. That is fact. If I am going to be inconvenienced for life, I want someone to go fuck around with Sony and whoever. It will make me smirk.
Edit: And, quite honestly, I hope they lay waste to PSN. If I am going to get fucked, I will cheer on Anonymous as they fuck someone else that fucked me. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

There's the problem--you're reading the face of the bill. That's what Hollywood wants, that's what Congress wants. Read some of the wording and you'll see that it's much much scarier. You think you have freedom of speech? Enjoy it....if SOPA passes, the government can issue an injunction against your website with just the "belief" of there being copyright infringements; ISPs can block people from accessing websites with full immunity, and the people who have their sites blocked/taken down have very little recourse. It would also make it a FEDERAL CRIME to use a proxy like Tor, which I know people use just for safety and security, and for no illegal or theft reasons at all.
I don't support much of what Anonymous does, I'm just privy to some inside information. That said, I somewhat DO support this, and here's why:
Ask 100 people walking down the street what SOPA is, and 95 of them will say it sounds like a body wash.
Ask those same 100 people a question about what happened on Jersey Shore the night before, and they'll give you a 20 minute synopsis including a breakdown of their favorite commercials of the night.
I guarantee you that if something like this happens, more people will realize what this is about and might actually stand up for their rights. There's a reason that groups like this have to take such drastic measures--because 99.999% of this country turn a blind eye to what their government is doing and don't care, they say "let someone else do something about it". Well, the "someone else" is about to, and even though it'll suck for a short time, it just might be what it takes to save us all from a draconian bill passing.
What anonymous doesnt understand or care about is that their activities will always end up hurting the consumer. Dont tell me they care about our safety or our privacy. If they did, they wouldnt have posted the names and addresses of thousands of innocent people. They are just as corrupt as the politicians and the systems they try to destroy. They backed down because they were going to come after the families, acquaintances, etc of anybody who ever even MENTIONED Anonymous; why do you think I went back at that time and deleted every mention I ever made of them?
Things were much more serious than I think anybody realizes. The cartels are murdering people by the dozens every day, there's a difference in collateral damage when comparing "hurting customers" to "having people killed".

Let me put it a way that all of you can take to heart:
If SOPA passes, the NDL could and very likely would eventually be shut down; think about how many things we do that could be deemed copyright infringement:
Screenshots from NCAA Football XX
Streaming of games
Video recaps (Sammy could face time in federal pound-me prison for the videos he's put together)
Under SOPA, every single one of those things--and a lot of smaller ones--could be grounds for a court order to shut our little shindig down.

You realize we copy entire articles from websites and post them on the forums right? Anybody heard from any lawyers about that lately?
Not to mention EA probably loves the pub from streaming and screenshots and this website in general.

Anonymous shuts down PSN. We can't play on PSN. So, we go buy (more) PS3 games to play offline. Sony benefits. What did Anonymous accomplish?

I dunno about you, but when PSN went down last time, I stopped playing PS3 as much. Many others I know did the same thing.

Jay, these guys don't mind living in a world like this:
16 U.S.C. Section 3370 makes it a federal offense for any person to “import, export, transport, sell, receive, acquire, or purchase any fish or wildlife or plant taken, possessed, transported, or sold in violation of any law, treaty, or regulation of the United States or in violation of any Indian tribal law or regulation of any state or any foreign law.
Many people have been prosecuted federally under this statute, which can make it a federal crime to possess a lobster which is too short under some state’s law, or to possess a bony fish from Honduras, which is prohibited in Honduras (though not in the U.S.) – and so on and so forth
Prepare for online monopolies and outright censorship. But, no biggie, let me play Call of Duty. That's why I love what Anonymous is doing. Because none of you are going to do shit. You look at me like I have four heads when I say I sent a letter - a fucking letter - to a Congressman. I get pranked because of it! And Bear with the "OMG, they will be even MORE MADR AT THE INTERNET!" So, fucking what. As of right now, censorship of the internet will be passed; let me enjoy someone fucking shit up. The Powers That Be aren't too comfy with the idea of a group of ordinary people out there that have the means and the will to target them for punishment whenever they commit evil. And unlike a group of brown people in Hakilanistanhadakalab that can be blown up and made to go away, Anon cannot be targeted so easily.
The elites have always expected the revolution to be in the form of a group of armed malcontent militias that they can round up and claim are terrorists. They have never expected a ghost army of needledicked kids at keyboards who take down entire corporations when they're not busy jerking off to Anime porn.
And I think it is great. Anonymous isn't some hacker group; it is just knowledge - the realization that we have all been hoodwinked and happily passed our essential freedoms over to tyrants masquerading as corporations and politicians. What someone chooses to do with this knowledge is up to the individual. If you agree with their philosophy then you are Anonymous. If you don't then expect us.

I actually did buy a single player game during that time....just don't remember if it was a Sony game or not. Now I hope it was.

I'm old school. Played many games offline and single-player style. Went PSN went down, I tried games that I wouldn't normally buy. Would do the same again if it were to go down.
If Anonymous really wanted to get a point across, maybe they should hack the PSN and put up ad banners that voiced their displeasure rather than shutting down the service. It's so dumb to shut it down. Occupy PSN! Who gives a fuck? Everyone will be pissed at them again, not Sony.

I actually kinda can't wait until SOPA passes. It will fuck your world up so much you will have wish Anon launched an ICBM at Sony's servers. I'll also be able to say "I told you so." It'd be worth 50 years of oppression, surely!
Anyway, this is my letter that I am mailing out tomorrow. To all, feel free to copy if you can find time in between your busy day of Dexter, PSN, sleep, and work.
As an IT professional, I must implore you to oppose the Stop Online Piracy Act(SOPA) bill. I can tell you that this is a job-killing bill. Worse, this will not stop online piracy. It will, however, greatly hinder internet innovation and drive many jobs and start-up company overseas. With the continued exodus of manufacturing jobs from the United States, it is imperative that the nation exploit its position as a leader in technology; not scare it away. This bill will cause untold harm to our country's ability to expand and profit from the (still) rapidly expanding information technology industry. This industry can provide high paying, low pollution jobs for United States citizens that are desperately needed in the Westchester County and the country itself.
The harm that will be caused by this bill will exponentially exceed and benefits that may come from it and I will not feel comfortable voting for a representative that is so keen on bringing in such damages.
