i'd say most guys' bills run between $75-$100, but that will depend on how many boxes you get and the package you buy. with their sign up package, it looks like the deal is sunday ticket for free, so i doubt you're getting a price break on your basic package. you will only have to haggle next year when they try to reup your sunday ticket. at that point, you may decide you want it or you don't want it, but at least you get it for free.

their customer service is top notch. the hd-dvrs are great. they even offer the whole house dvr service now where you can use one dvr and then have all tvs networked to it. with you just signing up, you may get that setup cost for free. there's a $3 per month charge, i believe.

we had cable before, and their service was awful. i've had dish when we've done vacation rentals, and i just hated it from the remote to the guide to the way channels were organized. annoying.

you will have weather outages from time to time, but nothing major. if you're getting major red-cell storms all the time, i'd be worried. otherwise, it's like a basic cable outage.

and boo on not using mine. i bumped the thread. ;)

i have an old package they don't offer anymore. it's the equivalent of total choice plus or something like that, but it's priced much lower since we were grandfathered in.

they have a sports package that gets you all the regional stuff, not just your own. i don't have that. i get my braves and hawks stuff, so i'm good. you really just have to weigh the packages and consider how many boxes you will have. i believe all boxes are hd now. each box will cost you $5 per month, and if you have a dvr, there's a cost for that. normally, they'll give you free equipment to start with, even the hddvr, but it varies promo to promo. honestly with them i've found that it really depends on the rep you speak with. now this is coming from a long time customer, so it might be standard for all new customers. it never hurts to haggle, though. mention some great perk dish network has, lol.

the boxes are where they get you in the end. $5 per month for boxes that aren't used adds up to where you could add a package and downsize. there's also a $10 per month HD charge, too. that might be waived with a new customer for a while.

one thing you could do if they charge you for the HD is sign up for it and then call back in a month or so and ask about the autopay option and mention that a friend got the autopay and they gave them HD free for two years (that's what i got the other day, and i read that it's fairly standard). they take it from your credit card rather than you mailing them a check.

they love to discount the hbo/showtime/starz packages when you call back next year about directv. you'll get that stuff free to start with, usually, but if you order it, they'll look at those to discount when you call to haggle about something.

Appreciate the info.

Going with the Choice Ultimate as it sounds the best.
I only have 1 HD TV now as the others are sitting in an art studio that isnt even used.

So box wise I will just need 2 and one DVR so I should be ok there.

Im making the jump, here goes nothing!!!!!

Mine breaks down like this...
64.99 for Choice Plus 185 channels--30 of which are music
10 for HD--you can ask to get this free for life when you are a new customer. (if you are exsisting, threaten to drop. or enroll in autopay)
7.00 for DVR--one fee no matter how many DVR's are in house
6.00 for the protection plan...worth it to me, without it, you pay service call fees, and receiver fees if stuff breaks, or goes obsolete.
6.00 receiver lease
6.00 mirror fee--to get package on bedroom DVR
15.00 for HBO...the more movie or sports packs you add the cheaper each is. 1 is 15, the 2nd is 12, the 3rd 9, etc.

114 total before credits...this is how it is on the bill...
-6.00 lease credit on 1st box
-10 HD credit
98 a month total, before taxes. when ticket isn't on the bill
I get ticket for 54.00 x 6 payments. or 324. they begin billing in August, so my bill is 98 for six months, or 152 a month when paying for ticket too.
--Normally, I ask for a reduce rate for ticket, and they work with you...got it for 29 a month last year.

Sunday ticket is currently 66.00 a month for 6 months for new subs...396 a year
you get that free,
3 months of HBO, MAX, Showtime, and starz --42 bucks x 3=126
Free HD, for life I think--10 bucks a month, 120
my package choice xtra for 35 a month for a year, then bumps to 66 a month.
free install ??
no shipping fee on the dish and receiver 20 bucks

So for what I have you'd pay
34.99 for a year
15 for HBO
7 for dvr
6 mirror fee to br
6 br reciever

71 bucks not including tax, keeping only HBO after the 3 months free movies expire.
100 bucks a month when the promo ends, not including Sunday ticket, which would now be less in year 2, because you are a customer.

I am officially on the DirecTV bandwagon.

Bill will be $60 for the first 12 months with all the good stuff and then if I choose to keep all of it, it will go up to $86

Still cheaper than what I am paying for cable.

Got Plasma and I $100 off (sorry Toro and Tim) and got HD free for life and my whole house DVR as well which will be huge in being able to actually enjoy the Sunday Ticket while she can watch her shows in the bed room...niiiiiiiiice.

Appreciate all the help and info and Ill bump this in a year to help other guys contemplating (AJ as i know he was ready for the plunge when I did it ;) )

sweet deal. can't beat that with a stick. the whole house dvr stuff would be money, especially for what you're talking about.

Yea, that was a huge bonus as well.

The deal seems to good to be true with the free Sunday Ticket and all the other free stuff when you do auto pay and crap but I made sure to get before and after promotion numbers and confirmation on bill totals.

Look forward to it!! Im just praying the weather isnt a factor...
