I've got both and haven't played a game on either since November or December.

My father in law has over 1500 DVDs. Over the last few years he has been slowly replacing them with Blu rays

And what percentage of those does he regularly watch or even watch at all??
Is it like collecting baseball cards to them?

They don't have friends, so watching movies is"their thing". They'll go to the theatre at least once a week, and often 2-3 times. Then he'll go buy the new release. He's also a collector of collections, which doesn't help
I will say, they almost always have a movie going, even if it's just in the background. I have a hard time watching anything (outside of classics) more than once, let alone numerous times, so to me it's just noise. I did the math once and he has well over $30k worth of movies sitting on bookshelves. To me it's crazy, but they seem to love it

I used to buy more, but I still buy a blu-ray on occasion. Typically it is one that comes with a digital copy. I haven't gone to only purchasing digital because:
1. They don't price digital copies competitively - they're about $5 less than buying the blu-ray with the digital copy and all extra features - and sometimes they're actually more expensive (they don't seem to go on sale often).
2. I can't watch a digital copy without a network connection and do need a disc based copy in some instances.
3. If I own the physical copy, I have that forever. If I have a digital copy on a service that ceases to exist, I have nothing, but I still paid for it.
But, I'm down to maybe buying a half dozen movies a year on disc, just something I really liked that I know I'll watch many times (including watching special features and watching the film with the commentary on).

I've been buying all the Marvel Blue Rays with Digital Copy. I figure its something my kid will probably want to watch as he gets older at least he will if I have anything to say about it.

He's going to look at you like you're crazy and he'll also look crazy while wearing his Google Glasses when you whip out a Blu-ray, and he has no idea what that is.
