That's what they mean by legitimately. Guys will hit perfect drives right down the middle and get up to their ball and move it to their liking in with their club or step behind it to slightly elevate it for their fairway wood. Every time they touch the ball while rolling it is a stroke and 2 strokes for pushing down the grass behind their ball. No doubt a lot of guys who do this are excellent players but those are strokes that aren't being counted and in a friendly game they really shouldn't be. (Unless we are playing for money bitch!) Throw in the hacker doing these things and that's where you get the "not legitimately breaking 100" comes in.

I believe the last time I saw the stat it was something like this...
PGA Tour players are at 50% from 7.5'.
That's crazy to take a 4' gimme. With that said, the crew I play with does do gimmes at 1'-2'. I usually putt out just for the practice and I'd guess I'm around 90% from there. I've definitely missed some. Even if you figure that you get 10 of those a round, that's at least 1 stroke.

i'm not judging or criticizing. just wondering.
cause i either re-tee it and take the penalty or go drop and take the penalty.
This is how we do it.
- If you kill a drive and it "could" be in play or findable, we typically just go look for it. If we don't find it, you take a drop from estimated point of entry into the hazard and take the penalty stroke.
- If you really screw up your drive and shank it hard and it's obviously OB/unfindable, you take a penalty stroke and retee.
There's no such thing as "no penalty stroke."

If it's questionable for OB or not, we hit a provisional shot just in case it is OB and we can still do stroke and distance. If we find the original, we pick up the provisional. Pace of play like Seeit had mentioned.

to be fair, i just said 4 ft.
i have no idea what they were giving. it was probably closer to 2 ft

I've seen plenty of pros miss from less than a foot.

bought clubs like 6 years ago, had never played. probably hit range for a month then played 5 or 6 rounds then put the clubs away and never touched them
about 6 months ago i got lessons and i play after market closes probably once or twice per week then once on the weekend. i still haven't broke 100.
granted i'm obviously a beginner, i still feel like i'm doing something wrong as everyone i talk to plays in the 90's and high 80's and i'm not able to break 100. i keep legit score, i don't take any mulligans or gimmies, i punch out of trouble if i need to.
the worst part is, i don't feel like i suck. i hit my irons really well, i can putt relatively well. i just can't figure out how to allign myself and i never hit to the right target. i'm not hooking or slicing, my target is just off and i can't figure out how to fix it. i also can't drive at all and barely take the club out of the bag.
anyways 100 is my goal, i'm hoping to break it soon.
I was generally a mid-90s player and I bought and read Ben Hogan's Five Lessons.
http://www.amazon.com/Hogans-Lessons-Fu ... sson+hogan
Not saying it is for everyone, but I loved it. It made golf make sense to me, and I'd played for 17 years before reading it. It didn't make me a scratch golfer, but it gave me things to work on by breaking down the swing into sections that you can feel and understand.
I play much less frequently than I used to (pre wife and pre kid I played 1-2 times a week and hit the range 3 other nights probably hitting about 300 shots a week at the range) but I've found that if I'm relaxed and I remember my fundamentals I can have a great round.
Shot a 79 my last time out, 8 over at that particular course, best score of my life (3 birdies, 6 pars, 8 bogeys, and an ugly, gross triple). I'm mostly a mid-upper 80s player now. I have plenty of rounds where I'm 1-2 over through 9 and then lose it on the back. But that's golf.
I will say you need to play the right tees. We almost always play whites. Playing blue tees is nuts if you're not single digit handicap. Even just the 10-20 yard difference on most holes changes the game completely. It can mean 2 clubs on a par 3 making the difference between a short iron you can stick to 10 feet and a longer iron that you leave 40+ feet away. On a longer par 4 it could mean a long iron running into a tough green rather than a mid iron that you can bring in from a higher shot. And on what should be shorter par 4s it could mean still needing to hit driver rather than going with a 3 wood or long iron for much better accuracy.
My best alignment tip is finding something 4-5 feet in front of your ball, something small like a leaf, oddly colored piece of grass, or even someone's old divot, that is lined up perfectly between your ball and your target. When you're addressing your ball, you'll much more be able to align yourself to that "marker" than to your target 100+ yards away. Definitely look to your actual target when you're aligning yourself as I think visualization of the shot is very important, but if you're only using your distant target for alignment, I think you'll continue to struggle with it. At least I know I always did.

Also, to put the book in perspective, after 17 years of golf, playing on my high school team, and taking lessons on three separate occasions, I changed my grip, how I align my feet, my body stance, my takeaway, and my first motion on the downswing. So basically everything. I went from always worried about getting the ball in the air and getting that "sweeping the grass" feeling in my swing to just wanting to hit down into the back of the ball with force and loving a great divot.

Played my first round of the season and I'm pretty darn happy with it. Nothing special by a lot of standards, but great for what I'm trying to do (basically starting "over" with golf).
Easy course (Jamaica Run), White Tees, legit 96. I tracked it on Swing-by-Swing and even did some shot tracking (first time trying it). I paid the $15 for the annual subscription. If I can link or post anything I will. Just 3 pars and 1 birdie, but no snowmen. A few triples though, sadly 2 on par 3s.

I don't know if you can see this link or not... pretty awesome how good it tracks stuff.

Edit... or maybe this one. I got an email that said people can track me as I go around the course. Crazy!

That's so cool. Seems like a lot of work though especially if playing with others as I like to drink up to the next hit. This would get in the way.

agreed, corey.
thats why the product i just posted seems amazing. you just screw the sensors in and it does all the work. there are others that you have to wear a sensor on your belt and tap it each shot. i'd forget to do it and it would ruin my scores. this you don't do anything, just grab the club and hit.
only issues i've read are with gimmie putts

I have one called tour striker. You basically enter your own info after the hole. Gives you a decent idea of where you're missing etc. it's free, so you get what you pay for. The one they sell at the Apple Store is good, but expensive.

It doesn't post. It just tracks basic stats. GIR, putts, direction of misses, fairway percentage etc. it's free for phone. Download and see if you like it. Can't hurt.

Not sure what all info you could see... but in simplest form, it will do the pathing without you doing anything at all. Keeping score is just as fast as using a scorecard. Finish the hole, whip out your phone, touch enter score, it has strokes, putts, fairway (yes/no), sand (yes/no) all on 1 screen. Takes 5 seconds to update the score. The only thing that actually slows down the round even a little, is if you want to track your clubs. It doesn't make sense to track all shots. I tried to track shots that I considered "full" shots. To do this, stand by your ball, tap track, all your clubs are pulled up on your screen, tap the appropriate club, put your phone away. Hit the ball... go to your ball, pull out your phone, tap finish. Done. You're taking the phone out at each point anyway, if you're using it as a GPS/rangefinder. For that purpose, it gives you distance to center, wind speed and direction, elevation, and "plays like" distance to center. You can get fancy and tap on the screen to get distance to objectives if you'd like.
By the time I hit the back 9, I had this down to a science. I got a solo tee time today and there was a solo about 1.5 holes ahead of me. I caught him in 3 holes, then we played the rest of the round together. We had to wait about 20-30min during the round, for the group in front and on one occasion looking for one of his shots that went into a creek. 18 holes in about 3.5hrs. Not super fast, but definitely not bad at all. I think with another round or 2 of playing, it won't add any time at all to my round. It might even make it faster because I have the course flyover on the phone, so blind shots and trying to get a good distance read are not an issue. It's all in my hand.
1 round in, I highly recommend it if you really want to get a feel for your actual results.

You can get this from swing by swing. The course pathing is automatic. The stats are backed into simply from entering your score at the end of each hole. Strokes, putts, sand (yes/no), fairway (yes/no), penalty strokes. It's quick, easy and all on 1 screen.
