Its all subjective really, but it comes down to psychology of the person. Player A may react poorly to a benching, while player B may use it as motivation to work harder. Same thing with good or bad plays

i dont think because you are successful 5 straight plays you magically get any better on the 6th play.
Of course plays are independent of one another, but people arent robots. Momentum seems to be more due to emotion than something tangible.
which was what i said in my first post and i guess just overcomplicated things the rest of the way.
everyone is different therefore its the players emotions/psyche that creates the issues, not some snowball of success that causes you to be more successful in the future.
the more robot like you are, the less it effects you. there are certainly hitters who could strike out 5 times in a row and step up to the plate the 6th time at 100% mental capacity while another person can strike out 3 times in a row and be completely mind fucked the 4th time up.
if there is nothing to it, then how does a player get "in the zone"? Play callers find themselves in a playcalling "zone" also. I think there is something to it...
Momentum is there fellas. Momentum in my opinion is all mental but it makes a certain player, even though he is not as skilled as the other player, believe that he is.
I will use an example. We played Canyon High this year and they won our league. We were more than likely double digit under dogs. At the end of the third quarter we are up by 17 points. Opening play of the 4th quarter their stud player returns a kick 99 yards for the score. They catch fire and beat us by four points going away. I feel like if that kid had not returned that kick for a TD and it took them a long TD drive instead, then we win the game. They took all that momentum,, played inspired defense, their crowd got back in it which rattled our kids, therefore we lose.
so because he returned the kickoff your team lost?
or because your team is mentally weak and got down on themselves they lost?
i dont think they have to be the same thing. certain teams that kickoff would have done nothing and the game would have continued as is. by saying momentum caused it you're saying that kickoff was the cause of the game swing.
I am with Riccio, I have a hard time grasping how momentum can come into play in games that don't have a consistent flow (basketball and hockey). Baseball and football have too many moving parts for momentum to really take hold, especially on defense.
yeah but to say big plays have no effect on the emotion of a game is not entirely accurate either. To what point they effect the outcome is up for discussion, but they certainly have an impact.
In his case, yes the KO is not the direct result for his teams loss, but it boosted the belief in the opposing team that they were not out of the hunt and they continued to push until they won. Does it make a case for his team being mentally weak? Yes, but I would not say that is why they lost either.
I do believe in momentum, but you are right given other teams in other situations the KO return may not have made a difference.
What I am saying is up 17 points, their crowd is quiet, their confidence is shot, and our boys believe that they can finish this thing through. Then all of a sudden the other team is given life, their crowd (about 5-6000 fans), and players feel much more comfortable down 10 than 17. I am not saying momentum consitutes a Win or a Loss but it is most certainly there. Athletics are so mental especially at the level that I coach at that I think momentum like anything else can be crucial. The kick return was a huge catalyst for their comeback as opposed to a 5 minute 80 yard drive,
there are certain plays in football that can cause a momentum shift......a kick/punt return, a long run/catch, a pick 6 etc. I don;t think it is there every game but it most certainly plays a role in a players psyche. Maybe not you as a player but your not like every other person and when a kid sees someone return a kick in their mind they sometimes think, "oh shit here we go."
Just got in. What an amazing, completely exhausting trip. Switched flights a bunch of times, been in like 5 different cities, the weather in ATL screwed up a lot of flights on the way back. Got a free stay in Vegas last night cause our plane was late getting there from Phoenix and we missed our connector. So that was awesome. Also, upon further review, a playoff within the bowl system is absurd. No way you could make two trips like that back to back.
The game was spectacular. Quack, you guys are a classy bunch. Our seats were in the Oregon section. Probably the best fans I have been around. And where do you guys get those cheerleaders??????? Holy shit. I was about 20 feet from them at one point and I could not even visually comprehend the rays of hotness emitted from that group. One big group of just plain smokin'. Didn't have the best view of the game from my seats, so I can't wait to sit down and watch the DVR. Looked to me like the D-line and O-line were the difference makers for us. Can't get over how well our defense played at the goal line. Really, really shocked. Still hasn't really sank in that we actually won. I really thought we would have to score 50 to win that game and definitely didn't think it would come down to Byrum.

Congrats, way to rep the SEC.
Hopefully the feeling is good enough to offset the steaming pile of crap that is your men's basketball team. Maybe they can get Newton to come help them

BCS games are awesome, glad you had a good time and came back with a win instead of traveling to the opposite coast for a loss
