I wondered the same thing. Drew Brown has a leg on him. Although his long on the season was a 44 yarder I've seen him clear some FG's that would have been good from 50 yards. I did think the play calling was much better this game around. The defense played well enough to keep them in the game but bad enough to lose it as well, which has been pretty typical all season. But thought they did real well as this was probably the best offense, and quickest, the team had faced all year. Ameer is a beast, 269 all purpose yards.
There is good reason to look forward to the upcoming seasons. The Huskers have a fairly young team.
I am curious who will step up in the I-Back role, will Newby beat out Cross or will someone deeper on the depth chart prevail.
Will Tommy Armstrong be the QB next season or will it be Stanton (who Riley recruited for Oregon State).
How good will De'Mornay Pierson-El be when he's a Junior or Senior.
Cethan Carter may be a breakout TE next season with Riley as the head coach. A lot to like in the secondary for next season.
Charles Jackson should be back from injury and should be thrown into that lockdown CB role, hope he can handle the pressure.
And the biggest question that should be answered in the next 2 weeks is who will Riley hire onto his staff. I think that is more important than the Head Coach position. I'd love to see Kaz and Ron Brown kept. Some Husker fans may hate me for this, but I would love to see Cotton kept on as the OL coach but we all know that's not going to happen.

in reality the game meant nothing. Why play longer than necessary and possibly hurt guys etc etc

I didn't watch 1 play of the game, and I approve of all three 4th down calls!

If they make 2 out of 3 of those field goals they win. That is just giving away points.

If they convert two of 3 of the 4th downs...

The win/loss doesn't matter to me as I am not a Nebraska fan. I am sure Trendon, George and every other Nebraska fan would like to have seen them win. I am sure the seniors would like to finish with a win. So yes the W really does matter.

But they didn't. They converted 1 of 6 fourth down attempts in the game.

Process vs results
It's also easy question decisions after you know the results.

I questioned the decisions as they were happening. They were going to need a field goal at some point in the game. They lost by 3 points and had 3 opportunities to get those 3 points. Twice on fourth and long and in field goal range he opted to go for it. Once was fourth and one and while I can see the arguement of going for it then I was still asking: "why aren't you kicking the field goal?" Bad coaching decisions. That is why he is their interim coach and not their future head coach.

Were they in field goal range?
I'll admit I didn't watch the game, so feel free to correct me where I'm wrong...
First, you said they failed to convert on all 3 attempts, but they actually scored a TD on 4th down.
OracleHCR wrote:But they didn't. They converted 1 of 6 fourth down attempts in the game.
ESPN's boxscores says they were 1 of 3, and the 1 conversion was a TD, so that 7 points alone kinda throws your notion that all 3 times as it happened you were saying they should have kicked it. They netted 7 points, and the only way to net more if they kicked each time would have been to make all 3 field goals...which brings me to the next point:
One 4th down was from the 34, a 51 yard FG it would have been. The other from the 31, a 48 yard field goal. The kicker was 2 for 7 on the season on FGs from 40 yards and out, his long was 44 yards in the 1st game of the season. Meaning, he was 1 of his last 6, and the 1 make was 40 yards. his last 3 were misses from 49, 42, and 46. So I question whether they were actually in field goal range at the 31 and 34 yard line.
This is what I resort to when my Saints are playing a meaningless week 17 game, Husker kicker stats!!!

They went for it on fourth down in the first half a couple times. I don't know what the box score says but I did watch the game. He went for it on fourth down 4 times in the second half. They scored 8 points on the one time he converted with the 2 point conversion. Yes they were in fg range according to the green line showing the kicker's range.
Saints win!! Saints win!!

Ok. But not knowing the data, that green line wasn't as automatic as I imagine they made it out to be. Seems like a 48 and 51 yarder were a crap shoot with virtually no shot to make both and very little chance to make just one. Factor in they scored a TD on their other 4th down, and they weren't 4th and very longs, and also factoring how well the offenses were playing compared to how bad the kicker is, it's not nearly the no brainer it was portrayed to be.
OracleHCR wrote:They went for it on fourth down in the first half a couple times.
Again, you watched and I didn't so i'll default to you...but ESPN, SI, and FoxSports all have the boxscore showing 1 for 3 on 4th downs for the game, all in the 2nd half, 1 TD and 2 missed conversions from the 31 and 34.

Wait what? That's breaking news!
I didn't watch a single snap, other than the very few on RedZone Channel...and completely quit checking at 20-7.
Of course the Saints win the 1 game of the season I wanted them to lose.

You're quite possibly the worst fan I can think of for your teams you care so much for.

And for the record, I can't watch the video Saints and actively root for them to lose as I watch.
But if I'm not watching a meaningless week 17 game, it's a no brainer. I root for what's best for the Saints. There is zero logic to arguing a win is best for the Saints today.

That is silly.
Here is my understanding as to why they kept going for it.
1. Drew Brown is not very good, at least not lately.
2. Nebraska was completely and totally incapable of stopping Southern California. You don't kick to/against teams like that, you go for it. Kick field goals against shitty offenses.

Agreed, especially on #2. You won't beat a team if you're kicking field goals and they're scoring touchdowns.

Their defense was holding up in the 4th quarter though. But a missed FG might have been the one thing to spark the Spartan offense and the Husker defense could have folded quickly after that as we have seen in other games in the past. I do think it was the right decision to go for it, although I would have liked to see if Brown could have pulled his inner brother out and nailed one.
I am curious how the upcoming hiring of Riley's assistants will go and how that will give a boost to recruiting. Huskers already lost out on a 4 star RB since the change in leadership. Riley said the staff should be in place within the next two weeks and I have my fingers crossed that he keeps Ron Brown, the RB coach.
