Memphis likely to vacate 2008 season

Come one, come all. Talk about anything not league or video game football related here.

For those bashing the coach, take a break! How guilty is this guy? Do you really think he went out of his way to make sure someone took an SAT for Derrick Rose? Do you think he made sure an agent laid cash on Marcus Camby at Massachusetts?

This guy has been bashed and bashed, and in every case he has been cleared of involvement by NCAA investigators. Isn't that enough?
I've said all I'm going to say on this topic. It has nothing to do with me being a homer; it has to do with the fact that it's the only thing you guys can come up with to refute what I'm saying. It's easy, it's a copout, and if you want to take that road then it's fine by me. But the man has been cleared of wrong-doing in this case, and when the NCAA clears a kid to play, it's really retarded for you to then blame Calipari for it...unless you want to claim he had someone else take the SAT for him, and then you're REALLY just showing how far you're willing to stretch to make it his fault.

Call me a homer, I don't care--it's like the kid in school who goes "your mama!" when he knows he's lost the argument.

Please contact the NCAA, as you apparently have some kind of proof of this, right? i'm sure they'd be interested in it....

Or are you simply stating your opinion as FACT, instead of using facts to support your OPINION?

And please tell me what my faith has to do with this? And I'm worried about EVERY coach's character, and I hope they never let it slip while they're at my school--and if they do, I WANT THEM GONE!!!!

if you think i could give 2 fucks that UK is involved in this then you are even more of a fool.

earth to you bro, outside of Kentucky, nobody gives a shit about UK or Kentucky hoops.

so you're throwing other coaches under the bus and defending Cal? hmmm, i wonder if Cal coached at L'Ville or some other school if you'd be doing the same to him.

No one ever said he is to blame.

I said he was in charge of both those programs and ultimaty in my mind he is responsible for those programs.

You are a homer because you defend him blindly.

Did he leave 2 schools right before they were hit with penalties?Yes

Thats all packsy said. He said look out Kentucky you may have to vacate something. History repeats its self. No one mentioned you you just come in blindly supporting Coach C. when he should be looked at with a close eye.

You really don't understand?

Got to agree with dolo here jsense, although Cal has never been penalized personally by the NCAA for these actions at these 2 schools, the schools themselves have been penalized.

Ill put it another way, You care more about the program than coach cal right? Are you not the least bit concerned how 2 programs have been penalized under the watch of your new coach? Coach Cal may smell like roses in the ncaa and your eyes but what about the programs he coached? Does that not worry you a bit. One time maybe, but twice is a trend.

Once again quit twisting things.

Ignore everything I have said. Now read this

FACT: Calapari was at Umass where a player took money from not 1 but 2 agents. School had to vacate a final 4

FACT: Calapari was at Memphis where Derrick rose committed multiple violations

He is responsible for the programs and those kids much like a parent is when there child is under 18. Thats how the Ncaa works. Oklahoma was hit when Bomar took money for a donor at a job. Stoops did not do it but he was hit because he stayed here.

Calapari bailed not once but twice.

Pretty shady is all people are saying and you get on a high horse about how he never did anything wrong when in fact he has never been charged with anything but he was in charge of both programs.

If I am driving a car and I get pulled over and they search my friends and they have pot and stash it in my car shit happens.
If it happens again I am hanging with the wrong people much like Calapari is not recruiting smart kids. Kids that can jepoardize a program. Much like friends that I choose can jeopardize my life

Yes, I'm concerned. But (and I keep hearing shit about this) we have a compliance officer for a reason--to keep our program clean. The Kentucky job is like the ND football job, or the Yankees' managerial job--it's a high profile job that comes with a LOT of scrutiny. If he fucks up, it's not going to take two years for it to come out like it did at UMass or Memphis. With what happened under Sutton in the 80s, we HAVE to make sure he does his job by the book, we have too much at stake.

Our big money boosters do not want to see us get hit by the NCAA again; so YES, I'm concerned, but I know if he fucks up, he will not get a pass. The AD's job will depend on this; the boosters' money will depend on this....and we all know what makes the world go round.

What he does at Kentucky will define his legacy--either for good or bad. It better be good.

And Doley, was Stoops at fault for that? I don't blame him for what Bomar did. He did it off-campus, out of program. The NCAA is one of the most corrupt organizations out there; they have no rules they have to follow, they have nobody they have to answer to. They are an organization with asinine rules and no oversight--how is that legit?

I here a ton more about the Yankess, and I live in Oklahoma.

Please shut up.

One day you will realize how dumb you sound. You just go on and on about how great Kentucky is. One day you will understand they are only that great in your eyes. Yes they are a great basketball school but please end all of this. OMG.

This post is why you are a homer. You act like Kentucky has the best compliancy department in the world.

Question Jsense, was this compliance lady you are high on in there when KY football got hammered a few years back?

I am sure UMASS and Memphis had great compliance offices as well but as you say, the NCAA rule book is a big beast and trouble does seem to follow coach Cal.

I detest the NCAA, they cannot properly police all the schools that they govern and they are selective with their punishment, their penalties are never the same for offenses that generally are the same but I also know I am bitter as hell for what they did to my tide in the mid 90s and early 2000s, yet we are still waiting for the NCAA to do something to the golden boy USC football and basketball programs for mayo and bush.

I was talking about in terms of the job scrutiny, not in terms of the coverage or popularity. Learn how to read.

And there you go again  , calling me a homer when I'm simply stating things that MEDIA have said--media who have no personal ties to UK, like Jay Bilas, Doug Gottlieb, and Seth Davis. Here are some others:

She was actually in the process of investigating Claude Bassett (the recruiting director for Mumme, who committed all the violations) when the NCAA launched their own investigation which went public. Bassett, who was already close to being fired due to the stuff UK was finding out, resigned. He has since filed suit against UK claiming that they just pinned it all on him....but seeing as the NCAA banned him from football for 8 years, I don't think it's gonna hold much water.

That said....sadly, there wasn't much oversight over the football program compared to the hoops program, and that's pretty much common for any school with a big-time program. I doubt Bama puts as much oversight into hoops as football; or Ohio State, or Notre Dame, etc. But like I said, it's not just internal--everything he does will be analyzed by the media, the NCAA, etc. If he screws up, I want him gone. And if something were proven about his knowing things from either of his other two jobs....then as much as I like him from what I've seen of him, I would have to strongly reconsider my supporting him as our coach.

And I'm with you 100% on the NCAA, they are corrupt and crooked.

Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Biffy the hoops team will get slammed hard over here at SC, but the reason the Bush thing goes away is because they really can not find anything that holds water that something wrong was going on.

Nope, we're working on it right now :)

People can disagree on things, and still work together on things. The people who run this nation should remember that :D lol

NCAA doesnt need what the courts need to prove innocence or guilt. Just the looking guilty is enough for them. Packsy you know more than me on the situation but what I know is what was reported by Yahoo and such. What did Bush do ( or not do)? Did his family live in house paid for by a marketing firm? I know they were interviewed by the ncaa, but did the marketing firm not have documents showing Bush agreeing to be represented by them while he still was at USC.

Biffy while I am sure there was some wrong doing with the Bush situation do not listen to anything that yahoo sports puts out about USC, they for some reason, love to throw them under the fucking bus all the time.

The basketball thing is just almost laughable with Floyd, I liked him too. But when you roll up to pay someone in South Central LA at a Starbucks in your Escalade your gonna stick out like a sore fucking thumb.

Either he's dirty and cheats at 2 different schools , or he is completely unlucky and it happens at 2 different schools he has coached at? Which is more likely? I mean seriously why should we not believe he had some knowledge of what was going on he runs the program and recruits these kids.

Here is a list of Vacated Final Fours in Ncaa Basketball history.

1961 St. Joseph’s Hawks
Vacated their Final Four appearance due to players' involvement in a point-shaving scandal.
Head Coach: Jack Ramsey

1971 Western Kentucky Hilltoppers
Vacated their Final Four appearance due to using an ineligible player.
Head Coach: John Oldham

1971 Villanova Wildcats
Vacated their Final Four appearance after it was discovered that Tournament MVP, Howard Porter, had signed a pro-contract with an ABA team during the season.
Head Coach: Jack Kraft

1980 UCLA Bruins
Vacated their Final Four appearance due to the use of ineligible players.
Head Coach: Larry Brown

1985 Memphis Tigers
Vacated their Final Four appearance due to using ineligible players.
Head Coach: Dana Kirk

1992 Michigan Wolverines
Vacated their Final Four appearance due to using ineligible players.
Head Coach: Steve Fisher

1993 Michigan Wolverines
Vacated their Final Four appearance due to using ineligible players.
Head Coach: Steve Fisher

1996 Massachusetts Minutemen
Vacated their Final Four appearance due to player signing with an agent during the season.
Head Coach: John Calipari

1997 Minnesota Golden Gophers
Vacated their Final Four appearance due to using ineligible players.
Head Coach: Clem Haskins

1999 Ohio State Buckeyes
Vacated their Final Four appearance as punishment for the actions of former coach Jim O’Brien.
Head Coach: Jim O'Brien

2008 Memphis Tigers
Vacated their Final Four appearance due to using an ineligible player.
Head Coach: John Calipari

Is it really pure coincidence that both of Calipari's programs are listed? I seriously doubt it. The guy is SHADY.

Both schools involved ONE KID, a very high-profile kid, who did things outside of the program.

Maybe he's guilty of recruiting kids he shouldn't have. Maybe he's guilty of not talking to his kids more about the perils of doing things outside the program. But Calipari did not pay Camby--someone else did--and Calipari did not have someone else take Rose's SAT--someone else did, and that hasn't even been PROVEN; again showing how corrupt and unregulated the NCAA is.

I disagree with that Jsense. I think the NCAA is corrupt for totally different reasons I guess then you, mostly due to their selective punishment and unequal penalties that they hand out. What you are saying is a coach is not responsible for his player actions off the field and is also not responsible for problem that occurs under his watch as long as he doesnt commit it himself.

So if boosters are paying players and the coach turns a blind eye, its not a coaches fault. Let's not be naive here. Steve fisher should have known better at Michigan, booster paid almost 1 million dollars for the fab five. Now if you are saying there is no way Coach Cal could have known about the issues at UMASS and Memphis then thats another thing, that makes him a piss poor coach when it comes to handling his boosters and ncaa regulations.

He has got to run a tighter ship then and make damn sure the players he recruits follow NCAA rules to a T and from his coaching record, he does not do that very well. Mike Dubose never paid penny one to that fat ass Albert Means, but he is responsible for that fucking mess. to give a coach a free pass on NCAA violations just because they arent directly named is just silly.

What I'm saying didn't come through right. I'm saying that the NCAA is corrupt and crooked because they are punishing Memphis for the SAT thing when it has not even been PROVEN that someone else took his SAT. That's where I have issue, that the NCAA is doling out sentences for things that haven't even been proven.

I also agree with you on their punishments being uneven and selective. They have long looked to lower the boom on some programs for some things, while ignoring others. I love that Tennessee football got away with tons of violations under Fulmer....of course, he tattled on Alabama so he gets off.
