There is an anode rod that helps collect calcium so that it does not mess up the inside of your water heater.
Changing this at least once a year, some people recommend twice a year and this makes a water heater last a lot longer also.

My father does not agree with step 6, to wrap the water heater in a blanket.
The walls of the water heater have 3-4 inches of styrofoam already, so he believes that wrapping it with a blanket is not doing anything, but some people as the article above recommends it.
