They're so cheap now, you can throw a 500 GB in for $50, they should be going for that, at least, with all the push on downloadable games.
As far as online costing money, I already pay for PS+ and I'd imagine it would get folded into that. If they bump it up beyond that, I'd have to consider whether I need it since NCAA is the only thing I play online.
Guess I can put off buying a blu-ray player to use for the spare room and just wait until the end of the year.... and starting saving the $600 it is going to be at launch (at least).
And it better be 10000000% backward compatible with everything from the PS3.

I wish I could be excited about this but in all honesty I most likely will not buy the PS4 until the NDL requires me to do so

They are using a new company for the chips so the games will not be backward compatiable. Here is an article. Plus you can't forget of selling games back as well.
New PS4 details: PlayStation Orbis with devs already, won’t play PS3 disks and features anti-used game tech
New rumors have emerged regarding PS4. Sources claim it’s currently called Orbis (and that might be the actual name) it uses both an AMD CPU and GPU, and has a release date of sometime around the 2013 ‘holiday season’ (that’s Christmas in England). Dev kits are already with ‘select’ developers and it will also apparently feature some kind of anti-used game functionality
According to Kotaku the information’s from “a reliable source who is not authorized to talk publicly about next-gen hardware but has shared correct information with us before”. Clearly whoever they are don’t quite get the concept of ‘not talking publicly’. Maybe they need a check list: Are you talking to a journalist? Yes? Then shut the hell up.
The name’s interesting as it’s been pointed out that ‘Orbis Vita’, or Orbis Vitae in proper Latin apparently means ‘circle of life’. If the info is correct it suggests PS4 and PS Vita could be tightly linked in the future. Sony’s UK MD and VP Fergal Gara has spoken before about the PS Vita’s ten year life span, clearly indicating it’ll be around to transition from PS3 to 4. Michel Denny on the other hand has also talked about “a PlayStation ecosystem: a high-end home console and a high-end portable console that really talk to each other”.
Adding further credence to the name is the fact that Orbis.SCEDev.net is a functioning URL on the SCEDev.net website. It doesn’t actually go to a PS4 page but it works so it means something to Sony. Try swapping ‘PS4′ for ‘Orbis’ in the address bar and it returns an error.
The hardware being discussed is an AMD x64 CPU and AMD Southern Islands GPU. Leaked AMD info has been linked to PS4 in the past but nothing specific. Apparently the Southern Islands name is part of a range of high end PC cards that can handle 4096×2160 resolutions, suggesting Sony are being very forward thinking in terms of TV screen sizes.
Less exciting are claims that PS4 won’t even bother with backwards compatibility for PS3 games and utilise some sort of anti-used game features – either through digital downloads or linking disks to PSN accounts. I don’t like the sound of that at all.

No way will you not be able to play used games on the console.
That would put a company like Gamefly out of business and seriously hurt places like GameStop!
Sony patented some anti-used game software a while back. It’s really unknown if it will be implemented. My guess is that it’s too early and will not. I think such a move would hurt the PS4 in a time where it seems prime to retake the top spot.

I know most of us are early adopters that have the original ps3s, but every ps3 since the 40 & 60 GB has not had backwards compatibility. When was the last time you played a ps2 game? Even in the first month of the console being out I wouldn't play them because the new tech was so awesome.

Forcing people to buy new games would then help the game developers. Might make the rental companies turn to sales, buying in bulk to reduce cost vs buying in a retail store
I think Jack Tretton said he is totally opposed to the whole thing. Also I definitely don't see them going to a pay to play online system. PS+ has been killer for them and offers much more now than XBox live.

The jump between PS2 and PS3 was huge. Non-HD to HD was a dramatic shift. I don't see where they're going to go with the PS4 since we don't have that next new visual level yet.
Plus, if it can't play disc based games, does that mean it can't play games from the PS Store? I have a ton of great games I've gotten through PS+. Not being able to play them on the PS4 when all it needs is an emulator is crazy. I think, for a launch system, backwards compatible at first is a must given the large library you can play of current generation games vs the small library of available next gen games when a console launches.

i would be shocked if the downloadable games aren't BC, but would be stunned if the discs were.

Companies make a few dollars per game that they sell.
They can make 100% even 200% on some used games.
I just cannot see that market going away. Not until the physical disc goes away and everyone is downloading games.
It'd be silly if the downloadables weren't backwards compatible. I assume it'll be like The PSP to Vita transition. Where the PS store can be linked and you can play downloaded titles. I mean, those aren't even used games. It'd be bad business (even by sony's standards) to not have digital backward compatibility.
On a side note, i'm a lil sad I went through the trouble to buy a 2nd PS3 now if that does in fact come out before the end of the year. Then again, the missus is getting deployed, so i'll have money to blow.
