By ultra physical, Dan isn't referring to a Bill Laimbeer double axehandle. Handchecking is a huge change on the perimeter. Back then, when handchecking wasn't called (it was still a foul, lol), you could basically stiff arm the guy with the ball and prevent him from driving. So not only did this take away the ability to drive, it limited the offensive options. The other thing that often goes unnoticed is the way that screens were called then vs. now. There seemed to be more moving screens/late screens (blindside, which are fouls if they come in late). So yes, overall, a more physical game. With that said, I prefer the game now.
