Weasel wrote:Been in the ICU for the last month, today is my last day. We had a patient last week, chronic alcoholic who comes in frequently. We put a breathing tube in her, got her kidneys working again, etc, moved her out of the ICU a couple days later. After being on the general floor, she was found on the ground unresponsive with several dixie cups next to her. After smelling the cups and her breath, it was determined that she drank about a half liter of hand sanitizer. Got her better, sent her home...

Today she is back in the ICU. Apparently she was in the grocery store, popped open a fifth of vodka and proceeded to slam the entire thing. Cops called, and she was unresponsive by the time they got there. Good times.

Why don't we just let people die?

It can definitely be frustrating, trying to help someone who wont help themselves. That being said, I try my best to withhold judgement. Being in Anesthesia in particular, I see these patients for only a few moments. I have no idea what their backgrounds are or how they got to a particular point. Part of the job

Yesterday I did the anesthesia for a penile prosthetic implant. LOL fuuuuuuuuck that, sooooo barbaric looking. I threw a similar pic in the spoiler for those interested, but essentially dudes dong is pulled in 4 different directions, sack wide open, tube through urethra. It was a trainwreck that I couldnt look away from, yet was cringing at the entire time
Spoiler!

My girlfriend was a nurse in the trauma ICU for four years. She's told me some pretty fucked up stories about people coming in just fucked up beyond belief. I couldn't do that for four days much less four years. She recently got a new job where they burn the cardiac nerves to treat arrhythmia. There's some big long name for it but I just call it the heart burner unit.

Had a couple cool cases recently.

First was a toddler who was in a house fire and had severe burns and scarring along his legs, particularly the knees. Unfortunately the scarring restricted his movement, so he needed to get them essentially reconstructed. Ive obviously read and known about skin grafts, but never really thought about how theyre taken/done until the case.

It was pretty neat the way they took the skin graft from the kids thigh. They take what looks like a cheese-wire made for skin, and essentially peel off the top layer of skin (left pic).

After the skin removed, the super bright red looking flesh reminded me of the old astro-turf burns you would see on players arms back in the day

Also did a pediatric heart transplant last night. Nothing notable to report, other than seeing the heart physically come out and get replaced was pretty trippy

my dad when he was young got his arm caught in the old school washers and tore a ton of skin off the inside of his elbow. They shaved layers off his leg to reattach it and I think they used a little extra on another kid who I think was a burn victim.

Just got out of a surgery with a 2 year old with some of the oddest anatomy Ive ever seen. He has born with 2 colons, and 2 penises. One colon came out the rectum, as expected, and one penis drained a working bladder, as expected. The second penis had a hypospadia, meaning the urethra came out from the bottom of the penis opposed to the tip (not terribly unusual on its own, seen a descent amount) and drained a second non functioning "bladder". Things get a little more strange though, as the second colon actually exits through the second penis where the urethra would typically be. Meaning, he had feces expelled through the second penis. Meanwhile, the second penis is otherwise functional and gets erections.

Cant say Id seen that before

As I was putting a patient to sleep last night, he looks at me and says, "I've got a pretty small penis, that gonna be a problem?" He was out before I could answer
