I’d start with no less then 32gb of RAM and also if you want to have a cool project with him, just build one.

It’s super simple, way cheaper and tons of customization.

The AMD Ryzen 7 3700 Processor is $299 alone.
The AMD Radeon RX 580 Video Card is another $180
16 GB of DDR4 is $60
240 GB SSD Hard drive is about $50 for the operating system
2 TB Hard drive is about $50 for storage
Comes with Windows 10 - $100 to buy a legit version.
The Cyber Power PC White case is about $80-$90 for one very similar
Then just need a couple case fans, Say $50 for 3 of those.

You would have about $869 building it, so to buy it already together and ready to go for $849 is a very good deal in my opinion.

These prices were all using Microcenter.com for comparison.

Not really cheaper as I just posted to build the same system with the same components.
16 GB of DDR4 is the standard, 32 GB would cost you another $60 as it is $119 for 32 GB.

With that said, I am sure you could find other video cards that perform the same for a little cheaper, but you might save even say $50.
You would still be around $800 to build it.

My point being you can build a much better machine at a cheaper or comparable price.

Building will always be a better option if you want a true gaming machine at a great price with great specs.
But also this is George so buy and be done is easier

Again, I just priced out the components. I would say even if you found some alternatives, it would still be $750 to build a machine with the same specs.
And I am surprised because yes, normally, building is much cheaper.

From a learning perspective, yes, it would be cool to teach your son how to build one.
But I was surprised at how expensive it would be to build one compared to the price they are selling this one for.

With that said, for me, personally, I always build, but I have done it 100's of times in my life, even if it comes out to be the same price.

dont build one. if you dont care about price and wanna have a father/son thing then i guess.. but just buy an alienware. ive had an alienware gaming pc for 5 years+ now and its finally "slowing down". Can still load any game I want but I can feel it. And it was about $1000 (5 yrs ago) canadian.

i only say dont build cause theres so much that can go wrong/get shorted and you could waste a bunch of money. Plus installing things like drivers is an absolute motherfucker

CPU Processor.
Usually you can get a Processor and Motherboard combo that comes with fans. You will want an upgraded fan if it is for gaming.
Then you buy RAM based on the motherboard that you buy. Newer ones are DDR4 RAM memory

For a tower, you have many choices.

Fans, you need 3. One on the CPU, usually comes in a combo, then 2 case fans.

You need a power supply, which I completely forgot in my pricing.
Some cases come with one, but some are not adequate enough to handle a good gaming video card.

Then most do 2 hard drives, an SSD for the operating system, 250-500 GB and then a regular hard drive for storage, anywhere from 2-8 GB.

I'll upgrade one. It's not hard to throw in extra ram or change out a video card

If you can do that, then building one is not much harder.

You mount the motherboard in the case.
You mount the power supply in the case.
You put the cpu in the motherboard.
Put thermal grease on the cpu and install the heatsink/fan on the cpu.
Install the case fans
Install the hard drives in the case.
Install the video card in the case.
Connect all power wires from the power supply to the hard drives, fans, etc.
Connect the data cables from the mother board to the hard drives.
If the case has usb ports, headphone port, etc. connect those wires to the mother board.
Install the RAM memory in the motherboard.

For $4, you buy a strap that goes around your wrist and you clip it onto the tower so it grounds you to the tower. So you will not short out the CPU, RAM, etc.

The issue you will have is that if you do not install a DVD drive, installing Windows has to happen from a USB Thumb drive.
You may have to go in the bios of the computer and set usb as a bootable device.
