Don't let facts get in the way of a good narrative.

His initial statement the day it happened is the key. I mean he was literally lobbed a gain some points softball as all he had to do was make a super easy speech condemning white supremacy and Neo nazis and he just could not do it.
I am not saying he is racist or even cares about their cause at all but he is not an idiot (about some things) and he knows that his most die hard supporters that will never question him are in that group and he just would not call it what it obviously was.

First response, he did not.
2nd response, he did
Today's response was more in line with the first response.
So yes and no. Tomorrow is a new day and probably a new response.

Hmmmmm I guess it's all in interpretation then.
His full on tirade today will go down as one of the more dispacable moments of this joke of a presidency.
If he doesn't get us nuked he will start a race war soon.
I hate being political I really do but man is this tough to watch as an American. Hell as a human.

You can watch the whole thing and make your own interpretations or get to the part I was referring to at the 43 minute mark for the most part.

Read a couple of articles, got the gist and all the quotes.
As with virtually everything Trump, the truth is somewhere in the middle. Don't get me wrong, he's a kook and he said some kooky things and looked like a fool(like he usually does), but also as usual the media blows it entirely out of proportion, such as this quote from CNN:
In the long and tortured history of a nation still trying to work through its complicated story on race, Trump's meltdown will stand out, as a moment ripped from the darkest pages of history and transposed into the 21st Century.
That's about as batshit crazy as Trump is...and he's pretty darn crazy.

When the president of the United States defends Neo Nazis even in the slightest way. Even with playing both sides of the fence like he did. Even in trying to create some kind of level of correcting his previous mistake.
It's a pretty damn bad day for America.

In no way, shape or form will it "stand out, as a moment ripped from the darkest pages of history and transposed into the 21st Century."
I mean, our history has slavery. Next week Trump will say something stupid, and we'll probably never think about or talk about what he said today.

How did he defend Neo Nazis in any way? What was so despicable about his comments?

He literally said "there were some good people marching on Friday night"
Not the media blowing it out of proportion. Not some frilly article. With his own mouth he said there were some good people marching on Friday night.
These good people on Friday night were chanting "blood and soil!" and "Jews will not replace us" and marching toward a black church with torches.
If you are marching with these people or putting yourself in this group, you are not good people.
He defended these people.
It's like saying yes hitler was bad but man there were some bad Jews in there that he gassed.
I don't know your stance or what "side" you are on but to not recognize his actions as a serious misstep and ridiculous way to act as the president of the United States I really can't comprehend your thinking.
Please help me. And I'm not being a jerk but please tell me what I'm missing and don't go with the media blew shit out of proportion bit as I am going off of his words in his multiple press conferences.
I'll hang up and listen.

He said he felt the president played both sides of the fence which I assume he saw as defending. My issue was his initial response and today's response. I also feel he tried to downplay IMO the true nature of the protest. Sorry I don't believe it was as simple as these people upset with the bringing down a statue for the mass majority as he stated.

He very clearly defined who he was referring to. There were people in attendance there that were acting peacefully and there to protest against the removal of the statue. He made that clear multiple times. But like the media, you're completely ignoring that and spreading the false narrative that he's defending the Neo Nazis (who he explicitly condemns in the same video). To that point, he also commented that there were some good people acting peacefully on the other side as well. But of course, what we hear is that he condemns the Alt Left.
So my further question would be, did you actually listen to the video that you linked and take note of the context of what was said, or did you just clip it from an article and run with the headline?

I get the general idea, but what on Earth would compel anyone to intentionally go to one of these rallies, I'll never know.
I'd rather go to Nigeria.

He clearly explains why his statements were different in the video.
The nature of the original protest is against the statue is fairly irrelevant. It's their constitutional right and they had the appropriate permits to be there. It's also the right of the other side to protest peacefully. However, they didn't have appropriate permits.
