Similar to what we did, though we didn't have the curveball part. I like that addition

Instead of that fancy metal stand that guy had, we did the top of the metal garbage cans attached to the fence.
lol my buddy had those wiffle balls and he threw one to me and it did all this crazy shit. then i threw it back and it was like a normal throw. Got me so ticked off
there were instructions on the box on how to grip it. :?
I never knew those came in a box. Only ones I've seen came attached to the handle of the bat with that plastic shrink wrap stuff.
i wonder how others grew up sometimes.

i swear i owned 500-1000 wiffle balls in my childhood. we'd play at least 5 days a week in the summer

between ripping thing, denting them so badly they weren't able to reform, losing them or them just getting too 'used' it was probably the top thing other than video games i asked my mom to buy for me.
lol take those wiffle balls and replace them with hockey sticks up here.

We played some baseball/wiffle ball, but my neighborhood was like 90% basketball, virtually every day.

The garbage can was perfect because it gave that audible return so the bitching and moaning on whether it was a strike or not was minimal.

Robinson Cano doesn't know that without a runner on first, he doesn't get to come home on a walk. Wow, bonehead play...

Grew up in a cul-de-sac with tons of kids in my neighborhood. I don't think a kid could ask for a much better environment. The circle provided the perfect diamond We spray painted the bases on the road. We usually had enough for a catcher for each team. We'd have at least a C, P and 2-3 OF. We played pitcher's hand for force plays and you could bean the runner with the ball for an out between bases. In the rare case that we didn't have a C, then we had the large square trash cans and we spray painted the back on 2 of those for the strike zone. We didn't play "just" wiffle ball. We used duct-taped wiffle balls or taped dead tennis balls. The wiffle ball bats were also taped.

Of all of the sports we played, 'baseball' was probably the least. We also had a half court basketball setup. This was before the portable goals were common. One of the dad's in the neighborhood made a portable goal by attaching 2 lawnmower wheels to a square steel base, then mounting everything on top of it. It eventually became a stationary unit when we setup the 3pt line and foul line on the street. To secure it in place, we cut out a 3" deep section of grass and dropped the steel base into it.

Besides basketball, the majority of the time was spent playing football. We could play 2 hand touch in the street (long and straight leading into the cul-de-sac) or we had 2 really good sized yards to play tackle in.

I thought that at first too... but I feel like there's a slight chance they actually tried to do that, thinking the C may not be paying attention. Although the chance of that is minute... think about him pulling that off. Just jogging home nonchalantly trying to convince the C that it's perfectly normal?

Like I said, almost certainly wasn't, but if they had tried that and pulled it off it would have been epic

Yeah, that's giving him too much credit though. He jumped like he heard a gunshot when he was being yelled at to get back and the catcher ran at him. Mental mistakes happen, but wow what an inopportune time. Bases would have been loaded with 1 out, but instead it's 1st and 2nd with 2 outs. He has struggled to start the season. Only 9 games in, but the Mariners bullpen has been disappointing to say the least. Tijuan Walker has been a disaster in his first two starts. I'm not giving up on them, because their offense has been pretty decent, but Fernando Rodney is going to get shot by his own arrow soon if he doesn't figure it out.

We grew up playing full court basketball.
Had 12-15 of us all about the same age.

Football was great too, 6 on 6 or more, tackle football.

I grew up playing in a summer baseball league, but in the off season, we played, what we called wall ball.

Not dodge ball as the internet shows you.
We used a tennis ball, the bat was the handle from a broom, and you pitched against a wall, so we didn't need a catcher.
Played 4-4 or 5-5 usually. 1 pitcher and the rest fielders.
There was no running of the bases, depending on where you hit it, it was a single, double, triple or home run if the ball was not caught.

Guys with kids/teachers: do kids still do a lot of this stuff? It seems like anytime I see a kid they have a gameboy or iPad or phone on them. Is recess still time for four square and football? Or is it just kids outside on their iPads?

I think I've shared the story about why before, but even though I don't have any kids playing, I have anywhere from 6-12 kids playing in my side yard nearly every day (weather permitting).

(Long story about why...)

When I was growing up, a friend's grandfather (kid lived w/him, no parents) let everyone play sports around his house. We destroyed his yard playing tackle football and baseball. Heck, we even used the side of his house to play home run derby, counting anything hit above the 1st floor brick area as a home run. He's the guy that built the basketball hoop from my previous post. He'd keep trying to reseed the yard each winter and always made sure that there was nothing dangerous laying around. He encouraged us to be as active as we could.

I live about 3-4 football fields from where I grew up (new development next to old development). His house was located at the end of the street that I grew up on. From where I live now, I can see that house from my front driveway. He still owns it, but rents it out. Every now and then he'll cruise through the neighborhood on his Harley and wave. Living in a small town, everyone knows who he is and how important he was to a lot of the people in the community.

We were 1 of the first 10-15 houses built in the new development, 11 years ago. When we went to choose the lot, I told my wife that I had to have this specific lot. It is a corner lot, with the side street running back into a cul-de-sac (I grew up in one). Today, the neighborhood I live in is filled with kids, mostly under 14 years old. A few years ago I came home from work and there were a few kids passing football in my side yard. When I got out of my car I could tell they were a bit scared, but one of them politely asked if they could play in the yard. (a bit late eh? I think the kids get a pass. :-) ) Obviously I told them that I didn't mind at all as long as they kept the yard clean.

Looking back at having that as an outlet, I realize how important it is to have an option like this. I walk through the yard every week and make sure that there isn't any trash/debris and every year I do my best to reseed it so it doesn't get too worn down. I also took the time to fill in a couple of holes. I've seen a few issues with parents telling their kids that they can't play tackle with the other boys, but I don't get involved in that. In fact, the 2 that I specifically remember don't care any more.

I haven't had much of a chance to go out and pass the ball around with them over the last 2-3 years, but I'm really looking forward to that this summer, once my degree is finished.

I'm just glad to hear that still happens. We did that kind of stuff all the time, and it was great. All the wiffleball stories were on par with my experience, but I just didn't know if kids still went out and played as much as we did.
