(and if they do, its because they have money taken out of their checks during the other 10 months).
Most teachers have to find another job during the summer months to supplement their income. Ive been teaching for 18 years and bring home less than 3K a month, for 10 months, so yea, pay is low.

we get paid over the summer.
Because they take money out of your check during the year to pay you during the summer, or they take your 10 month salary and stretch it over 12 months. We do the same thing. Its not extra or free money.

I think yall are confused. If you get paid during the summer, its because you get paid less during the year. If you chose not to get paid during the summer, you would get a little more each paycheck. Either way, your yearly salary does not change. We can choose to do it either way in our county, And I choose to get summer checks, but it just means my pay during the school year is lower.
Either way, in response to the comment that started this, its not accurate to condemn teachers for complaining about pay when they get summers off, because they are only getting paid for 10 months work. Many teachers have to find other work either during the year or the summer to make a livable wage. There are not many professions that require a 4 year degree and after 18 years of service are bringing home less than 3K a month.

I'm guesing the teachers replying kinda understand that process.

I'm honestly not trying to hate on teachers, though it may sound like it, but you're only working 10 months, so you should only get paid for 10 months of work.

I think the idea though from Corey's first post that sparked this debate, you know what you're signing up for when you become a teacher, and it's not for the pay. So complaining about it seems silly since people choose that profession.

I was more or less telling him to go to a diff district as well because 3k a month for as long as you've been doing it would piss me right off.

Not after working in the field for 18 years, have kids, etc.

I hear ya.
Not putting down teachers at all as shel stated earlier, but dont complain about pay when other benefits of the job outweigh pay for that individual.
Again, as you said you havent complained about it but for discussion sake.

1. Like I said, people know the pay when they get into it, so it's odd to complain about it since you knew that was part of the deal.
2. I don't feel all that sympathetic when teachers say they have to find a summer job to supplement for their lower pay. So you have to work year round like the rest of us to pay for your bills, kinda hard to gain sympathy from me for doing what I already do.

Never said I work hard...Just being here for 8 hours a day year round is work enough.
From the looks of it, teachers aren't exactly working much harder than me though judging by AJ's posting habits during work hours.

I agree with what you are saying in this post for the most part.
to #1 - It actually was decent average pay when I started 18 years ago, it just hasnt changed much and insurance has gone up, but with a History degree, not much else i can do. So now Im kinda stuck.
#2 - I agree Im just doing what most people already have to do - work year round, but you cant have it both ways - some complain that teachers have off in summers, but then some say they're not sympathetic when they work year round.
