He found out about what happened on a Friday on Saturday, immediately made a call, and talked about it on Sunday up the chain of command. The President and VP both told him they'd take care of it, then lied about it and covered it up, but told him that it was taken care of. He did exactly what he was supposed to do.

People say he should have called the police, but he wasn't the one that witnessed the act, so he did exactly what he was supposed to do, and was then assured by the President and the VP (now going to jail) that it was taken care of. There's 0 evidence of him covering anything up, and there's 0 evidence of him knowing more than what he told.

The man is old, and as many often joke about, oblivious to a lot of stuff. If he didn't see it happen, and no one told him about it, how is he supposed to know that it's going on?

Yes it happened on his watch, and yes the captain goes down with the ship, but for people to be angry and pissed at him I just don't understand. He did what he was supposed to do.

I could be way wrong, and it could come out that he knew, and at that point I'd completely reverse field, but I for one do not fault him for this, and I read the entire report.

Just my $.02, maybe I'm wrong.

It is my understanding that he found out about this a while back (no?). Like back when this guy was still coaching under him. he turned it in and they did nothing about it. Knowing they did nothing he carried on. That is what I understand.

SO.... When did Joe Pa find out about this.? allegedly.

On a semi off-topic note, I do not think it should be a crime to not report a crime. Two rules that are complete bullshit:

1. Lying to the police is a crime.
2. Not reporting a crime is a crime.

If Penn State makes the B1G championship game, NAMBLA is going to be buying up huge chunks of commercial air time.

As usual you're carrying this to extremes. Sure Joe Paterno should have done more but he's not Jim Jones here.

I would give him a pass until further information came out, but he doesn't even get that and I'll explain why.

Maybe Paterno told whoever he was supposed to tell. Maybe he didn't just accept the, "It was taken care of." answer they gave him. Maybe he was all over this, demanding meetings and detailed report of investigation/interviews from his superiors. And maybe they covered it all up and showed him bogus reports showing how they did their due dilligence and there was no evidence of wrongdoing, so Paterno was satisfied. If that happened, I'd be willing to give Paterno a pass, and maybe that did happen.

But here's the problem. Sandusky was accused of something similar in 1998. Then this happens in 1992. THEN, some time in the past 18 months, Paterno was interviewed by the grand jury regarding this issue. Now knowing ALL of that info on Sandusky, what did Paterno do at that point???

Absolutely nothing.

He STILL allowed Sandusky around the athletic department or whatever it was as late as last week. That’s ridiculous. Just knowing that leads me to believe he didn’t do all that stuff I said above, and he just allowed the entire issue to just “go away”.

Seeit I initially agreed with you that Joepa did what he did and that's it. But the fact under his watch this guy was even allowed on campus is ridiculous after the he witness report is insane. He could have stopped the queer from continuing show his face on campus. Instead this creep was seen using the facilities just last week.

You do realize that even though the perception is and media wants you to believe, that what JoePa says goes on campus... after 1999, when JoePa removed Sandusky from his staff.... errr... Sandusky retired... he no longer had any direct authority over him. JoePa does have an AD above him, he does have a President above him. If you want to blame someone for 1998/2002... blame the people that had a chance to hang this guy in the court system then. My verdict on JoePa's role will come when I know more about his role. Right now, there simply isn't enough to implicate him.

I'm curious to know exactly what McQuery said and to who... the report doesn't say what, only that what Curley/Shultz said isn't credible.

I've been wavering on JoePa all along... McQuery, Shultz and Curley can rot it in hell.... Spanier should probably be terminated.

Any thought on Paterno wanting to coach till he died so this story would never leak?

I'm not convinced that it relates to Joe being at Penn State. I think that was more about them trying to protect Penn State's image or protect Sandusky.

Keep in mind, this isn't a 'football team' issue. This is a Penn State University issue that happened to involve people that worked with the football, among others. It's bigger news because of the status of the Penn State football team and their image as a 'clean' program and Joe's image as an honorable/moral man. But in no way should this be a reflection on the team.

Agreed, which is why I don't think you can levy sanctions, in any way really.

if you think any of the others should rot in hell, then you have to have the same opinion on Paterno.

You're right... I'm out of line saying that about the 2 administrators... because I don't technically know what they knew. So that isn't fair. But like Spanier, they shouldn't have jobs. My stance holds on McQuery though.

if you mean NCAA sanctions, i agree.

i don't think anything happens to the football program. maybe a slap on the wrist probation or something.

you can say that of any person who was aware of the situation.

which is why i absolutely say fuck Joe Pa, fuck the admins and fuck anyone else who was aware of the situation.

its not debateable in my mind... anything short of coming out in the media and outting the guy, calling the cops until he was arrested or kicking his ass is inexcusable.

in an academic sense, sure joe pa told the authorities but you have to use common sense and look past the fact he told the next in the chain of command. that doesn't excuse him.

Yea. Like I said, the idea of them covering it up behind Paterno’s back while he was asking and making sure this was handled doesn’t seem very plausible since after issue after issue with Sandusky and after Paterno testifies to a grand jury regarding the issue, Sandusky is STILL running around campus.

I know, like Reign said, Paterno still has an AD and a School President who are above him. But given these circumstances, I’m fairly confident that Paterno can make one phone call and say he doesn’t want Sandusky anywhere near his football program or campus, and that could happen. He shouldn’t have had to make that call, but I’d imagine he has that kind of pull.
