I hate getting in this debate but the majority of guns in Chicago are brought in thru Indiana and Wisconsin and that is not really a secret. It is very easy to get guns in those states. People just try to politicize Chicago because of all the gang violence we have going on there.

Re: Random Discussions
Again, I repeat, make the laws as tough as you want to, I am all for it.
That is why I don't consider myself a gun advocate. Most of them do not want the laws to change.
If you are a citizen with no criminal background, you will be able to get a gun legally, so I have no problem with it.
But part of me believes what George is saying. If it were a gun problem, it would be way more frequent.
I do understand, however, you take kids like the Florida shooting and he may not have had access to that gun if the laws were more strict.
However, Las Vegas would have still occurred because that was an adult with no criminal background.
To dak's point of basically, take the guns away, like Japan, etc. good luck with that one.
Gun defense basically started during the Boston Tea Party and Americans believe this was/is how they can defend themselves against tyranny, so the government can't rise up, etc.
Not that armed citizens have the power to over take the military, but that is an argument for another time.
I just think, people think if you make the laws more strict, these types of crimes go away. I think they go down and hopefully drastically, but they do not go away completely.
I know, where I live, in the country, there are so many people with so many guns.
I don't know what the answer is, but I do agree that something needs done.
And maybe I am weird in thinking this way, but Las Vegas is one issue, but when this happens in schools, it makes my blood boil as those poor, innocent, children that have barely started their lives.
I know I think of my kids during times like this and that is when I feel that something definitely needs to be done.
I just read that in Florida, an AR-15 is easier to buy than a handgun. Not sure how true this is, but if so, something definitely needs done!

Sounds like you are admitting that criminals will always find a way to get a gun. Make the law as impossible as you can to get a gun and criminals will still get a gun.
Chicago is easy to pick on because of the amount of crime that happens in a localized area of the city.

I get what joe is saying about the constitution and being hundreds of years ago and such but then where do you draw the line of amending certain aspects of it?
I don’t think as a human and political society we can maturely handle any of that so I feel that’s a slippery slope.
Honestly and you can kid yourself all you want, there is no solution. Honestly none.
Freaks, people with mental problems, everyday joe...you cannot stop someone with intent to commit something like this. It’s impossible.
Yes we can make it harder to do and limit access in certain ways but you will always have these scenario. I just hope we can get them down to other country ranges but I don’t have much faith in the US in doing that.

I do not know the answer but I am certainly not saying that. Choosing Chicago as an example for guns is just wrong/lazy. If every state had the same gun laws as Illinois, NY, or California there would certainly be less violence because there would be so many less guns. I think it was Joe or AJ who said it may be meaningless now that there are so many in America already.GeorgesGoons wrote:So it's not a gun law problem?wdoupis wrote:I hate getting in this debate but the majority of guns in Chicago are brought in thru Indiana and Wisconsin and that is not really a secret. This whole it is mental health and not guns is just crazy talk. We have had 18 school shootings in the past 35 days (not all on this scale obviously) and the rest of the developed world has had 18 school shootings in the last 20 years. Are Americans just so much more mentally ill than the rest of the world? I highly doubt that is the case.

I think the better thing would be for you to explain why states with the strictest gun laws have the fewest gun deaths.GeorgesGoons wrote:So explain Baltimore.....shel311 wrote:Chicago would be an outlier.

You know what is lazy? Using the 18 school shootings stat. Look it up and you'll see you got duped by ABC and everyone else reporting this. An example is that 1 kid committed suicide in a bathroom. 4 more where a gun was discharged and broke a window in the school (no injuries). Semantics, yes a gun was discharged on/at school grounds. But in all those 18 shootings only 1 had fatalities caused by a mentally ill kid.

show your facts. And is "gun deaths" including suicide or just homicide?shel311 wrote:I think the better thing would be for you to explain why states with the strictest gun laws have the fewest gun deaths.GeorgesGoons wrote:So explain Baltimore.....shel311 wrote:Chicago would be an outlier.

Re: Random Discussions
I specifically typed not on this scale but a school shooting means there was a gun shot at a school. The fact nobody died in that instance does not take away that it is just far too easy to get guns and take them to schools or theaters or wherever else and shoot them.

One school shooting was a gun going off in a dorm room on a college campus.wdoupis wrote:I specifically typed not on this scale but a school shooting means there was a gun shot at a school. Those are not school shootings. Don't care how you try to spin it.
Once again, if you are a criminal or plan on doing criminal activities you can always find a way to get a gun (or whatever means you want to use to harm someone). No laws will ever protect the innocent from these people that intend on committing a crime.

the only answer is love.
more love from parents, more love from leadership, more love and empathy and compassion.
less meds would help too.

1. Guns
2. Population
3. Mental Health
4. Tribalism
usually a mix of these cause a shooting. America has 330+ million people and like an avg of 1 gun/person? To be honest its shocking this isnt more frequent, especially with mental health going up.

Oh, like the guy that committed suicide in the parking lot... of a closed school? Yeah, the 18 is very bogus.

You can keep saying that all you want but the fact is it happens in America and not really anywhere else, especially on this scale.
I for one do not have a strong opinion on this because like Corey, I am not sure we can do anything and we all know the NRA and Republican Party will never allow anything to be done anyways.
I do wish and think we should at least close all of the many loopholes there are too acquire guns so that we really try to enforce people getting them legally which is easy enough anyways but even something as simple as that never happens.
If this is a mental health issue as you say then why did we make it easier for people with diagnosed mental health issues to buy guns last year? Americans just love guns and the right to have them is more important to half than saving human lives. Once you just acknowledge this you can move on and focus on things like the 2053 draft

The 18 is bogus but focusing on just that is deflecting from the real point that America has a problem on a level that other countries don't with school shootings.ReignOnU wrote:GeorgesGoons wrote:wdoupis wrote:I do not know the answer but I am certainly not saying that. Texas 3,353
California 3,184

Guns in Texas are like palm trees in Florida.
I have never seen so many dudes walking around with guns on their hips and it was kind of shocking at first but then I realized...oh yea, Texas.

Re: Random Discussions
Not all gun related deaths are equal. Suicide shouldn't be included in the conversation when talking about gun deaths.
