In regards to Melky, I mean he still has to hit the ball right? How does a PED improve his eye hand coordination by as much as it has over the past 2 seasons? Not really defending him, just don't fully understand the advantages of PEDS yet since I thought it was strength and recovery related

i think it's always been about the health factor. If his right arm isn't hurting as much as it would be with a normal hitter x amount of games into the season he can continue swinging on the same plane and making better contact.

Whatever, if you can hit that well in AT&T you deserve the contract

If anyone watched the game today it was clear he was getting a ton of room on the corners, but he clearly had it. Choosing to throw the 2-0 slider when he was one out away from the perfect game says it all

a 300 ft flyball becomes a 325 ft shot off the wall, a weak linedrive becomes a harder line drive thru the hole. a ground ball that you might be a step slow to beat out you now get the extra step, etc etc

there are tons of advantages of being stronger and faster.

a buddy of mine threw 88-90 his whole life, did some hgh or some shit and was throwing 93 a few months later simply by getting stronger.

you still have to make contact, you're correct about that. its not as if a body builder is going to get up there and start hitting ML pitching, but a ML quality player is likely to already have the basics... the juice just throws you ahead of everyone else.

people don't realize how small the difference is in baseball (as compared to other sports) between a guy who is in the ML's to a low level minor leaguer or a college kid who never gets drafted. most really good college guys can do ML quality stuff in certain aspects... the ML quality guys are just far more consistent and can usually do multiple things at a higher level. don't get me wrong, the difference between a guy like Felix or Josh Hamilton is fucking enormous... those guys are freaks.

Biggest fantasy mistake I've ever made--taking lincecum over Felix , third round this season.

we can just agree to disagree here.

recovery is certainly a big part of it and steroids aren't turning bums into stars... but they turn a B talented player into an A-/A player and a A- player into an A/A+ player and an A+ player into Barry Bonds. i'd say 50% of it is the recovery and ability to go out everyday near 100% and the other 50% at improving your natural traits.

I think the position that gets the best results from PEDs are relief pitchers. PEDs tremendously help recovery, and none need it more that a relief pitcher. I'm not saying it doesnt help the hitter but i don't think it is even on the same level the RP gets from the benefits.

The speed of the ball off of the bat from the increased power is a huge difference. This is probably the most overlooked aspect of PEDs, or the part that very few people understand.

I'm not so sure that the difference is as much as people think in football or basketball either. I've played basketball against numerous D1 college players and a few below average NBA guys. I've played both competitive flag, semi-pro/indoor against former/current NFL players. Basketball is probably a larger separation in talent and it's most likely due to their being a much smaller number of NBA players vs the size of NFL rosters. In fact, in terms of the former NFL guys, they frequently weren't even the best players on our teams.

i can't speak for football since i stopped playing after flag when i was 6

but basketball is enormous. the difference at every level in hoops is huge. the difference between an average NBA player and a college player is not remotely comparable.

I really can't stand this whole Stephen Strasburg must be shut down business...this could be their one year to make a deep postseason run. Limit the innings, ok but leave him off the postseason roster ?

The most ridiculous part of this IMO is the poor planning for it. i don't get why he couldn't be more limited in previous starts, to maybe 5 IP per start here and there, skip a start here and there, an extra day's rest. I don't know, I'm sure some of those things may hinder him from peak performance, but surely, they're better than shutting him down right before the playoffs.
