I have found any teachers who are in their late 40's hate common core because now they actually have to come up with some new lessons instead of using the same old recycled bull shit. Just my opinion.
Or maybe they've just been around long enough to know this is just the new "flavor of the month" and before it ever gets time to see if it improves learning, they will implement the next new great thing.

I teach 2 classes of American History and 4 of Driver's ed. AH textbooks dont change that much from edition to edition and teaching kids to drive hasn't changed, just the distractions while driving has. I'm not changing shit.

And while Im venting, My students EOC exam counts 30% of their final grade, but counts 50% of my evaluation. Thats totally fucked up.

Or you could try changing things up? I mean teaching the same thing over and over the same for years would get fucking boring. Keep,on teaching that way tho man, whatever floats your boat.

I'm probably going to create a shitstorm here... but...

Outside of the obvious advances in technology over the years, why should teachers have to drastically modify their lesson plans? While I understand the monotony of repeating the process every year, is there something else I'm missing? Is it about catering to a different social atmosphere?

Several reasons. At the very least a student taking, lets say Algebra on the east side of the county should be learning the same things/concepts (around the same time in the year) as the student on the west side. Sounds obvious, but that doesnt happen with "old school guys".

Lessons having the same 'message' is fine. People just dont like to change.

the reality is it hasnt changed much at all.

I definitely understand that the pacing should be the same. But if the old school guy was teaching the right stuff at the right time when they initially created their plan, then why should they have had to adapt at any point, if nothing else has changed? Is it because we have accelerated the pace and the old school plans were never adjusted, meaning that those teachers aren't teaching what is necessary?

there are district assessments once a month or so to make sure teachers and students are at the correct point in the curriculum map. If the kids are meeting their targets and on pace for the EOC exam, then i dont think it matters HOW they are delivering the message.

Problem arises in that many times old school guys want to teach the same thing in week 23 of the school year this year as they did in week 23 when they were a 3rd year teacher.

Yeah, then that case, I don't consider them old school guys... I consider them 'doing it wrong' guys, because the standards have changed. While I've got a lot of teachers in my family, I don't have the slightest idea as to how they go about their processes. Being in a process driven, analytical field, it seems obvious to me that if things have to be done by a certain time, then the lesson plans should be fairly straight forward and doing it in a way that doesn't conform to those objectives is just plain stupid.

I'm just a firm believer in mixing things up. I think if a teacher uses the same things over and over again then he/she will become bored of teaching it the same way, thus not being as strong a teacher. I'm not right tho, it's just lazy to me. Keep in mind tho I've only been in the game for two years now. It's just so,etching I believe it is all. I think changing it up is just as good for the teacher as it is the students.

Last day of school today. I had two kids get in a fight in my class yesterday after they finished their finals. They got suspended for today. Idiots.

Considering they have to come back tomorrow when every other kid is out of school to take the finals they would have had today... then yes, they are definitely idiots.

I should have clarified. They were finished with their final in my class. Today is the last day of finals and then tomorrow is a half day for teachers.

Ahhh, makes sense now.

They seem like good kids, I'm sure they were just buying time to get a little extra studying in for that last Final.

LOL yeah probably. I have a feeling they both will be trying to attain a higher consciousness today in order to better feel the answers, you know, man.
