Going back wayyyyyy before smartphones even, I always had to have the latest and best new phone out there.
I've learned...i'll just chalk it up to old age...but I do the same exact things with every single phone I have, and it's nothing complicated. Texting, the same apps, web browsing.
I just don't see the point in getting the newest phones at the most expensive prices. I feel like the phones for half the price ultimately do the exact same thing.

I have never understood this either. They are significantly cheaper 6-9 months down the line anyway. Almost like driving a brand new car off the lot....hahaha
I agree to an extent. Do I need to upgrade right now? Not at all. My 7+ is blazing fast, screen is great, battery is off the charts good and camera is excellent.
For me though, why not? I am on a yearly upgrade cycle so I upgrade every year. Easy decision and my work ATT plan makes it convenient to do so.
Batteries
Camera
Speed
Screen technology
Each phone and case scenario is to the individual user. These are truly the biggest things that matter when deciding when to upgrade. Example, what Weasel is stating just today.
But battery life and optimization, cameras which people use more than ever now a days, and having a screen and speed for a device you look at more than your TV throughout the day makes a huge difference.
Everyone has their use scenario and not everyone's is the same.
Not sure what ATT plans are nowadays but don't you pay a certain amount per month for the year with that phone, and the more expensive phone is a good bit more per month?
I am like you shel, I used to want the latest tech stuff, but now, I do the same things on my phone, so as long as it works, I am cool with it.
I have the S6 Edge plus and I do like having the larger screen, so until this one dies, I am good with it.

That's how it was when I had it.
If you are not buying it outright, up front, then yes, you pay say $25 to $44 per month for the phone.
But if he is paying $40 per month now for his iphone 7, it is only like $2-$4 more dollars per month for the iPhone X.

This is what frustrates me. The phone itself is still fantastic. The screen, battery, all great. Camera still takes amazing pictures. But without system updates, the thing just eventually bugs out, and Im not smart enough to revamp it

Yea at some point Google and even Apple stops supporting older devices and wont send upgrades through.
Stick with the Stock Android line if you want the fastest and easiest updates. Updates behind Samsung and carriers take much longer.
The first version of the Pixel would be a great upgrade for you. They just released the Pixel 2 so you should be able to find in the price range you mentioned.
Shel on the other hand isnt having your same luck with battery.

$35 a month.
Thats just for the hardware, correct?
Correct. Then after a year, you can pay the difference to buy it outright(or keep paying monthly til it's paid off) or turn it in for another.

Yes so I can upgrade every year.
What I normally do is pay it off early and resell my old phone for a large amount as it is then mine to own. (iPhones hold their value much better than any Android variants)
If not, I keep it and its basically a lease to have the upgrade every year option.
Either way it still allows you to upgrade every year.
It is literally like buying a car. They will look at the damage if any on the phone and offer you a price to buy it back and apply it to the price or the upgrade price of an iPhone/droid. Where they really hammer you though (in California anyway) is they charge you sales tax on the original price of the phone, so that is where the extra money gets added in and makes it expensive.
