I lived there for 2 years. It was ok. Not as bad as people make it out to be, but nothing special.

People from the area just have an insane amount of pride in where they're from, and the city, and the teams (obviously). More than anywhere else I've been. So they get a little upset when people rip on it.

As a die hard Bulls fan this D Rose news is crazy. I never saw an athlete go from so high to so low basically due to injuries he couldn't control. He certainly puts his foot in his mouth sometimes. All in all, it was probably right for both parties and I will be rooting for him in NYC. Nowhere near as much as I will be rooting for Joakim wherever he ends up.

Ha, it was funny because that was posted while I was typing it up lol. I was going to do a Joakim gif but I saw Pearl Jam there 3 times so Cleveland has nice memories for me.

Being a vacation spot is what makes a city a good city?
Like Dan, I am not saying it is great, but it is no where near the armpit that people make it out to be.

They are working to improve it big time.
They put in a park in a city square, they are remodeling their "Flats" district which was all bars and was cool when I was in college, but it was a bad section.
They are redoing that to be a very nice part of town now.

They are working on putting in family things to do, an aquarium, restaurants, etc.
I just feel that people like nick may have a bad feeling about Cleveland and really know nothing about it.

What is good about Cleveland? I guess I would ask, what makes other cities cool?
What features do you like about Pittsburgh, Columbus, Philly, etc.

Sure, Cleveland is not a Miami, NY, etc. but they are not trying to be.

They have the lake, which, I have always admitted, they did a poor job utilizing, but they are working to make it better.
They have the Indians, Cavs and Browns stadiums all within a few miles of each other with the Cavs and Indians, literally, right next door to each other.
Their downtown has some night life areas that are starting to become popular and are cool to visit.
They have a tremendous array of food/restaurants to choose from.
They have great museums, science, kids, art, natural history, etc.
They have the Rock 'N Roll hall of fame.
Their Metroparks are some of the best in the country.
They have something called the West Side Market, which is a neat experience for grocery shopping.
If you are into orchestras, they are in the top 20 in the world and top 5 in the US.
They have a beautiful botanical garden.
The zoo is pretty cool.
The Playhouse Square district has 4 or 5 theaters to see plays, comedians, shows like Blue Man Group or Stomp, etc.
They have a decent amount of craft breweries popping up.
Many of their restaurants offer live music on a weekend with outdoor patios, etc. House of Blues in particular, always has some cool bands playing.
East 4th street has a section that is closed off and each restaurant along here has a section outside.
They have a Little Italy, that, if you like home made Italian food, I would put it up against any other Italian neighborhood in the country.

The downtown is pretty cool and has a lot to offer. Much more than the avg person that is not from there would realize.

It is not technically part of downtown Cleveland, but from downtown, you can take a boat ride to Put-In-bay and the other Lake Erie Islands which is also a good time.

Again, I am not comparing it to a Miami or Santa Monica, etc. but it is much better than most people give it credit for.

Maybe more of the male belly button of the US.

If a city of that size doesn't already have those types of things, that may be a decent reason it gets knocked.

I agree with you shel, in the past, Cleveland did not do a good job at it, but in the past 5-7 years, they have made great strides to improve and continue to.
They still have a ways to go, but they have much more to offer than many people give them credit for.

That is right in the downtown square you idiot.

Go through their metroparks, they have over 9,000 acres of land.

Cleveland's biggest issues over the last 30 years have been that the resident's get in their own way. I could go on a long rant about how pathetic Dennis Kucinich ran the city in the late 70s and how Jackson hasn't been all that more impressive, but has made some solid decisions related to businesses, which has helped to turn it around. Cleveland tends to be excessively liberal but for many of the wrong reasons (not going to get into a massive debate on this). Their terrible local choices created major economic issues. This was compounded by (some argue directly related to) Cleveland being one of the worst hit locations by the mortgage crisis (Cuyahoga County was top 10 nationally I think). The city lost more than 15% of it's population. This was a 2 fold result from the issue with the mortgages and the change in local restrictions that required city employees to live within city limits. The changes over the last 10 years have been pretty substantial... but it is certainly a city that deserved it's reputation up until recently.

As for the city itself, it's actually a pretty cool experience to visit. Sure it doesn't have the awesomeness of Miami, but it's on par with just about any city in the midwest that isn't named Chicago.

As it relates to sports... Cleveland sports aren't really just Cleveland. Their reach in Ohio is heavily influential all over the state. I'd venture to say most Columbus sports fans are Browns fans. The Browns - Bengals don't really split fans 50/50 until you reach Dayton, which is just 30 miles from Cincinnati. I don't think it's really surprising that so many people turned up for the parade yesterday. I'm 3 hours away and had quite a few friends that made the trip. Definitely a passionate group.
