Flashing Red light? Now what? (fix, or slim or fat)?
Flashing Red light? Now what? (fix, or slim or fat)?
So looks like my PS3 is dead, flashes red light for a second, then a light green one it looks like, and then switches off. At least I got 5 years out of it, but no idea what to do now. The quick reading I've done, looks like if I get it fixed, it will still most likely happen again since it has once. So, might have to lean towards getting a new one, but do I go for the fat one or the slim one?
What are the drawbacks to the slim? I read somewhere that the blu-rays don't look as good on it, is that true? (play more movies then games on it to be honest). And, looks like the fat one on Amazon is only 25-30 more then the slim, so kind of really mixed up now.

I don't know why the movies would look any different.
The usual difference that is pointed out is that the old Fat ones would play PS2 games but the new Slims do not.
If you fix the dead one (to get a game out or whatever) you can use it to stream things like Netflix or play PSN games and it should last you a good while. What I found that has kept killing my old one is trying to play any disc based games or movies.
I would definitely only buy a slim.

The video on mine cuts out occasionally for 3-5 secs since the end of last season. Ive been putting off doing anything since I really dont care when its during a movie or whatever, but its gonna suck when Im in the middle of a play during the season and cant see shit. Damnit
Re: Flashing Red light? Now what? (fix, or slim or fat)?
But what if I can get a fat one for only 30 more? I'm really split on what to do. Oh yeah, any thoughts on what to do with my current one? Sell on ebay or trade into gamestop?

Why would you get an old one that is going to die sooner rather than later? You'll be in the same spot you are now?Mtwasik wrote:But what if I can get a fat one for only 30 more? ??? I meant a new fat one. Don't they sell 2 kinds now, fat and slim? When I said trade to gamestop, I meant for store credit, or towards a new one.cougnix wrote:Why would you get an old one that is going to die sooner rather than later? They are no longer producing "fat" ones. Any of those you buy are more than a year old/leftovers already.Mtwasik wrote:??? I meant a new fat one. Don't they sell 2 kinds now, fat and slim? Don't know what gamestop does for store credit. I think it might have to be working/at least turn on for them to take it.
If you have a friend with a heat gun, you can fix your system for about $5 and have it as a streaming/media device.

i got mine fixed at gophermods.com and it cost me 60 bucks. I didnt have to ship it because i live in the twin cities but they ship it back to you for free. No problems with mine. I think they guarantee 2 day turnaround from when they get it it. Good cheap way to get it going and if you fix it its worth more on a trade.
Re: Flashing Red light? Now what? (fix, or slim or fat)?
Yeah, I know I can get it fixed for 60, but do I want to do that and then have it die again in 3-4 months, that's what I have to figure out. From what I'm hearing/reading, if it dies once, it will most likely die again.doc wrote:i got mine fixed at gophermods.com and it cost me 60 bucks. Too bad you didn't foresee this and trade in your old one. Gamestop is giving $150 trade in until Jun 3rd. Im considering brining one of my fat boys in to take advantage of it.

Loaded up NCAA for the first time and before I could play a game, I got the blinking red light. Anyone know where I can get the gel stuff?

The thermal compound? I picked it up at Fry's, which is a local electronics store. I'd check places like that.brwnbear wrote:Loaded up NCAA for the first time and before I could play a game, I got the blinking red light. Anyone know where I can get the gel stuff?
You also need a heat gun and several difference small screwdriver types to get the system apart. And then it is just a temporary fix.
