What exactly does the Roku player do?
Found what appears to be a deal on Woot.
I feel like I need one even though I have no clue what it does, LOL.
If I have a Netflix subscription with the disc for the PS3, is there anything else that makes this thing worth it?

Don't get it. You don't need it since you have a PS3. There really is nothing special about it and the target market for those are people without devices that stream Netflix.

Re: What exactly does the Roku player do?
For those of you that watch netflix through the PS3, are you able to see HD shows on it?
My wife got me a Roku before they starting doing it through the PS3 and 360. In my opinon it was a much better picture, but that's not enough reason to spend the money for it.

Yes Mark . they do HD tV shows and Movies as well. Not all the movies are HD though but a good portion of them are. IMO its the stnadard HD quality stuff you would watch on live TV. At least it appears so on my TV.

They say the roku did other stuff aside from Netflix, so i was just curious if any of it was worth buying.
Appreciate the info. U came through on info for my laptop way back when, and it's still working perfectly. So I'll trust u on this one as well.

Besides the fact that it refuses to work with a TV but that sounds like operator error.shel311 wrote: it's still working perfectly.

Yea, the operator error there goes without saying.Cnasty wrote:Besides the fact that it refuses to work with a TV but that sounds like operator error.shel311 wrote: it's still working perfectly.

Roku does have other stuff, access to the MLB channel, something like that (i hate watching baseball, so no idea exactly what it is), facebook, pandora, maybe 20 other channels as well, but 99% of what people use it for is Netflix.

Re: What exactly does the Roku player do?
It is a personal media player. You can use the services built in it or just use it to watch stuff you downloaded that are stored on a pc on your network.
I have a Western Digital Live TV device and if you download movies from torrents or wherever, they stream them from your pc to this device.
Most blu-Ray Rips are in MKV format. From what I was reading earlier, the Roku does not support that format yet.
The Roku on Woot today, does NOT play 1080P at the moment. But it will, sometime later this year, Roku is supposed to release an update for it so that it will support 1080P video.
And this is the problem with the PS3 and 360, they DO NOT support the MKV video format!
But I use sickbeard, a personal PVR service to download shows through a program similar to a utorrent called SABNzbd.
So I do not pay for HBO, Showtime, etc, but I can download Entourage, True Blood, Weeds, etc. using sickbeard. It downloads it automatically and stores it in a folder on my desktop that is upstairs.
The shows are there as early as an hour after they air and at the latest, the next day.
I then use my Western Digital device that is downstairs in the living room and we can watch the episodes in full high def on the living room tv in dolby digital or dts surround sound.
We do movies this way too.

Niddler, that sounds great and would make the Roku on Woot well worth it, IMO.
Only thing, if you had any clue about my computer literacy skills, you'd know I'll never figure out how to do that shit.

That is why I told you not to worry about getting it.

Re: What exactly does the Roku player do?
Software like that works great Weasel.
For me...
1. I didn't want to have to take time converting anything after I just waited an hour or two for the 8 - 13 GB MKV file to download...
I have the U2 concert at the Rose Bowl, that is a 30 GB file...
2. The WD device is in a room where I do not have a gaming system.
With the WD system, I just download and watch.
But my main reason was that the WD is in our living room and my gaming systems are all in my little man cave..gaming...football room.
