Passing Cops
Passing Cops
So I am driving to work this morning in a 45 MPH zone and theres a logjam of traffic in front of me at 40 MPH. I weave my way to the front and see that everyone is staying behind a cop thats goiong exactly 40MPH (3 lane street and the cops pacing everyone in the far left lane). I turn on the GPS to make sure my speedometer is right and then proceed to set my cruise control to 46 and pass his ass on the right side. I get about 100 yards out front and he speeds up and weaves in right behind me and tailgates me the next 2 miles til I pulled into my shop. Now I am not saying he was just following me, this cat was bumper to bumper with me the whole way, if I would have tapped the brakes he would have been eating my trailer hitch.
I am sure he did everything short of a colonoscopy back there and I guess he couldnt find anything wrong unless he wanted to give me a ticket for 1 mph over the limit.
Whats everyone elses take on this, do you pass them or just sit back? For the cops out there is that a no-no or did I just hurt his ego a little? I know if he would have had his lights on or something then you have to hang back but he was just cruising along like it was no ones business.

assholes like this on a powere trip give cops a bad name

Re: Passing Cops
Was it on the highway/freeway or was it on a road with lights on it. In some states it's illegal to pass on the right. Don't know why he was going under the speed limit in the passing lane, I know in Maine the cop would have been at fault because it is illegal to stay in the left lane when not overtaking another vehicle. If he was an asshole he could have given you a ticket for passing on the right and going 1 mile over the speed limit.
Re: Passing Cops
It was a road with lights, one of the main roads thru St Petersburg FL. Dont think theres any state laws against passing on the right though. Not that I have ever heard of.

Re: Passing Cops
same thing in Vermont. And you can actually pass on a double-lined street in VT, but most ppl don't know itShiftdnb wrote:Was it on the highway/freeway or was it on a road with lights on it. ...as for this situation, I'd do the same thing you did marine and just go by him at a pace that would make it ridiculous for him to give a ticket

Re: Passing Cops
yeah it gets bad down here some mornings with all the long bridges from St Pete to Tampa and everyone trying to get to work and the cops come out "Pacing" all the cars across these long bridges doing exactly the speed limit. Funny to watch the morning news helicoptor traffic monitors and see the logjam they cause because some of these bridges are miles long........

Re: Passing Cops
I am not certain if the "passing on the right" is a black and white law in a book somewhere or "frowned upon" but I would have passed him as well if within the speed limit.
Dont think I would have on the right, but I definitely have passed cops before which is pretty dumb since I have limo tint and its insanely dark.

Re: Passing Cops
Even if he ticketed you for 1 mile per hour over, it wouldn't have stuck. They generally give around 5-7 mph to account for the variance in speedometers and in the guns. The judge would have dismissed it immediately if he gave the ticket.

If the cops are going slower than the speed limit then I pass them hoping that they don't pull me over just to be an ass

Re: Passing Cops
Sounds like he was just being a jackass. People pass me all the time when Im working. Alot of times Im going under the speed limit (but in the right lane) because Im looking for an address of a call or a person that was just called out and Im trying to find them. Its funny how Ill be going like 10 mph under the limit and everyone will slow down and not pass me. I dont ever stop anyone unless they pass me going atleast 10 over the limt and thats just out of making me look bad for passing me that fast. If Im actually sitting somewhere and writing speeding tickets with the radar I give up to 15 mph over before I stop someone. I dont stop for less because everyone goes between 5-10 over and I would literally be stopping everyone.

You have NO idea how bad I wanted to do that. If I could have gotten someone on the line to confirm that I wouldnt be in the wrong I surely would have done it.
Another question since we are kinda on the subject here is what do you guys in law enforcement think of things like Veteran License Plates and Military stuff. I always wondered a few times I have had police officers get behind me after I was speeding and then peel off after a couple miles if it had anything to do with my Marine Corps License plate and US Marine Corps Scout Sniper tire cover on my jeeps Spare tire on the back? Does any of that make a difference when going to pull someone over?

Re: Passing Cops
I always wondered the same thing.
Like if I have a Gator cop pull me over due to my Canes plate for something ridiculous. Id give him Tha U and then speed off.

Having a Canes logo displayed pretty much implies that youre doing something wrongCnasty wrote:

Not so much anymore with the plates because now I have seen where drug mules and transporters are getting those plate too thinking they wont be stopped. So pretty much when I see one of those plates I look to see if the guy driving fits the part. I have Marine Corps plates on my vehicle and my wife has been stopped before.
