NDL Handicap Index

Post by Downing11 »

For those of you who know how to calculate a real golf handicap index, this should make sense. For those of you who don't, it will sound like another language. What is important to know about a handicap is that it is NOT an average score, it is based on potential. A real handicap is based on 20 rollings scores, taking the 10 "best" scores. Scores are not as cut and dry as what you shoot. It is based on the rating and slope of the course you play, the harder the course, the higher the rating and slope. Basically shooting a 70 at Augusta is not the same as shooting a 70 at John T. Public Municpal course. Each round you play gives you a differential score and you add up the best 10 differentials, muliply by .96, divide by 10 and that gives you an index, the lower the better. You then apply that index to the course you are playing taking into account rating and slope that gives you a handicap number for that course. If I am a 6 handicap (I wish) and you are a 10, then I will be giving you 4 strokes per every 18 holes we play.

For sake of argument, I just used the best half of your scores, I deemed all the courses we play on the game to be the same slope and rating and instead of using the 0.96 multiplier from above, I use 0.90.

I created an NDL Handicap Index for everyone though the Zurich event, so for a maximum number of rounds played of 14. If you have played all 14 events, then I used you best 7 scores. If you played 12, then I used 6, etc. Eventually, we will use the last 20 rolling scores like in real life which is more indicative of your current handicap.

Here are the list of NDL Handicaps. Where you see Adjusted Strokes, that is the number of strokes you will get adjusted per round. So if Buckeye is -26 total for the next 2 round tournament, we would then subtract 2 strokes (1 per round) and his net score will be -28.

Golfer : NDL Index Adjusted Strokes
Downing : -12.86 : 0.00
AUTiger : -12.60 : 0.00
Buckeye : -12.09 : 1.00
Weasel : -10.93 : 2.00
Baker : -10.16 : 3.00
Jsence : -9.30 : 4.00
wwfi08 : -8.40 : 4.00
George : -8.10 : 5.00
Oracle : -6.69 : 6.00
Dak : -6.45 : 6.00
Jake : -6.12 : 7.00
Driccio : -5.40 : 7.00
Nasty : -5.10 : 8.00
Krgkmg : -4.95 : 8.00

I'll see how this looks after the Players Championship and see if it needs any tweaks and potentially put this into action for Season 2. What I would anticipate doing is calculating everyone's index once a week on Monday's which would apply for the 2 tournaments we play each week.

Let me know what you think. If you have any interest in the spreadsheet I used for these, give me your email address and I'll send it off to you.

I feel bad now making you do all this from my comments. My bad

I was just throwing ideas on how to make the tournies more competitive and realistic without adjusting actual settings and sliders which I think are perfect.

No worries, I had most of this already done for a golf outing I run every year. I just had to replace the info with our stuff which I already had in excel anyway. It wasn't really that much work.

Will this handicap ever get added to our scores? If so, could we add another column in the tourney standings to reflect where we would be at with the handicap?

Not sure if we have decided that yet, it is still up for debate. If we do go with it, I will add the additional column.

I think we should, it would make things a little more interesting with the standings so the bottom feeders like me and Corey (and Dave if he is still around).

What is everybody's level now? We've got to be getting close to a point where this is no longer needed. It is kinda silly.

It's not about our levels, it's about how good we are at the game. Without this, Downing runs away with the title every season. I like it, it puts pressure on everyone to play even better than normal.

I thought we started this because of all the different levels of everyone?

And if Downing is better than all of us, he should win every title. What other league we have would institute a handicap just because some are better than others?

Handicaps are used in real golf. They aren't used in other sports.

Agreed. If downing is the best, he's the best. Everyone's level should be pretty close by now and this should be unnecessary.
