How to DMZ and Bridge to fix connection issues

Post by Nole4real »

Long story short...new house, new DSL....new modem, new router.

I configure the ps3 in the DMZ only to find I cant connect to AJ last night for a league game....1st time I couldnt connect to someone since NCAA 07 I think.

Anyway, I verify my settings for DMZ. I open the ports just in case, I assign the ps3 highest priority and all that shit.

still nothing.

I go direct from modem to ps3, no luck.

so then I know its not the router, its the modem.

I go back to my old house and modem and realize and some points I "Bridged" the modem...effectively turning off all Security features for it (which are a waste anyway), allowing traffic to pass freeley through it.

BOOM, reset router and it worked.

By "worked" I mean I forgot to mention that I was checking the status on my ps3 menu and I was getting the dreaded NAT 3 status.....

After bridging the modem, I now have NAT 2 and can hopefully connect to AJ tonight.

IF anyone is having problems I'd say contact your service provider and ask them for a link or file that shows how to "bridge" your modem....on mine it was very easy..it was a button that said "bridge"

others seems u have a little more leg work

you can also google it.

AJ, your time is almost up

I'm really confused. Messed around with the modem for close to an hour and still am not having any luck switching from NAT 3. I don't have a router, but I bridged only for the connection to die and have a horrible signal. Am I doing something wrong? Is it different for just a modem setup?

my bad Sammy.....forgot to put you should only bridge your modem if you have a router.

Bridging the modem lets the signal straight through but you would them need a router to handle the signal.

Its easy to restore the modem....just look on the back and there should be a tiny reset button indented. Get a paper clip or small pin and push the reset button in and hold it in until the lights flash once (should be about 10-30 seconds)

then let modem fire back up and you'll be fine.

hmmm, if you are going direct from modem and are STILL a NAT 3, you may wanna pick a up a router, then we'll try to bridge the modem and see if we cant get you to level 2.

Worst case if it doesnt work, you can return the router and get your money back.

Id keep an eye out on Black Friday for a $25-$40 router for sure. PReferably get linksys and I can walk you through the steps real quick

fyi also - the reason the router and bridged modem may work i believe is because you cant set a dmz or open ports on the modem like you can a router.

the default firewalls are whatever the company that made them decide it to be.

The router will give us control over what we allow and dont allow . ie- let the ps3 run un abided since its for gaming and doesnt store personal documents cookies and all that crap

(read top to bottom)

k, this should be easy then

1 step is to dmz it..that'll take care of 90% of problems

2 ways to do it..u can program the ps3 to always have the same ip or just find out what it currently is and when it changes (usually every 60 days or so depending on when u power it completely off and how many other wireless devices u havein the house), u can just change it on the router

thats what i recommend

with that, turn your ps3 on and sign on

goto the network settings and get the ip address

goto a pc and type in 192.168.1.1 (sometimes its 192.168.2.1)

leave the name blank and type in admin as the password

once in do the following

1) Access the Router’s web-based utility by entering the IP address (default 192.168.1.1) of the router in your internet browser (ie internet explore, firefox, etc).
2) Go to the Applications & Gaming => Port Forwarding tab.
3) Disable or remove entries you have entered for forwarding unless you want to keep certain ports going to some other network device (ie PC). The Port forwarding feature supposedly overides the DMZ feature for the any entered ports.
NOTE: Keep this information in case you need it later or want to go back to port forwarding.
4) Go to the Applications & Gaming => DMZ tab.
5) Select Enable next to the DMZ. In the DMZ Host IP address field, enter the IP address of the computer or game system you want exposed to the Internet. This will bypass the NAT (Network Address Translation) technology for that computer/game system. If it is a PC, best to have a firewall configured.
6) Once completed with the configuration, click the Apply button

give it about 15 seconds, turn off ps3 (using joystick), then turn back on..make sure ip is still same...do test...u should be getting NAT 2

if you dont, use the below link to "bridge" the modem since that will be the issue

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1970

good luck ta ya

(gonna copy and paste this in that thread so others can see if it helps them)
