The Masters

Post by DRiccio21 »

i'm pretty fascinated by this Bryson DeChambeau kid.

amateur stud that is called the 'mad scientist'. uses all irons that are the same length and is huge into analytics. my type of guy. going to be rooting for him.

Hideki Matsuyama is my favorite golfer so he's who i'm pulling for

I am more than excited for the Masters. Gotta pull for Rickie as he is my favorite and have Jason Day in a golf pool I am in. My favorite sporting event of the year.

What's the reason with the iron length? Just to establish a more consistent swing pattern?

That would be my guess. You'd set up the same for every shot. Shorter irons are much easier to hit so it likely improves consistency with the lower loft clubs when they're the same length as the higher loft -- likely with some sacrifice of distance. But if you can dial it in, accuracy tends to win out over distance, at least after the tee shot.

Quick Summary for those that don't want to read about it all... Dave can correct me if I'm off on this stuff...

He started by reading a very old swing mechanics book, spent time analyzing what he felt was the optimal/most consistent option for him.
- His irons and wedges are all of the same length (37.5, the length of a common 7 iron)
- He uses a single swing plan, meaning that when he brings the club back, it's flatter/lower than most pros
- He doesn't hinge his wrists nearly as much as pro golfers (more than 90 degrees open)
- He uses jumbo grips, which force the club into his lifeline in his hands... this limits the wrist hinge
- Because he doesn't hinge as much, he doesn't generate as much lag at impact
- The swing, overall, is highly consistent, though limited in a few minor elements
- The combination of the club length and swing style result in narrower yardages by roughly 5yds
- He swings his irons around 112-113 mph
- He has 2 driver shots, 1 of which he considers his control shot, using a similar swing and producing the same swing speed
- His 2nd driver shot has another club with a smaller grip (not sure if he carries it every weekend) that allows him to drop the club into his fingers and create more hinge. He claims it's about 12 more MPH, resulting in about 20-30yds depending on variables like wind

He also uses a customized unique putter that is very basic, no lines, no funny shapes... meant to create proper sightlines and limit reflections.... among other things.

He's been playing practice rounds with a lot of big names too. They're all interested. He was out with the gamblers yesterday and held his own. They kept asking him questions about his swing and such

I am still in shock by Day's last 4 holes. I was so excited for a classic Sunday between Spieth and Day. Definitely got ahead of myself on that one.

There's still a chance. Day was -5 at the turn. He's got the game to make a run, and he tees off early tomorrow. The wind was up this afternoon and a lot of higher scores came from the later groups. Tomorrow he's early and Spieth is late. Could certainly flip back around.

That being said, a triple at 16 is inexcusable if you're #1 in the world
