I don't really get why people think that stuff is ok.
Re: Cell Phones and Tech Shit
Probably because it's a non tangible consumption item.

Why is it not okay? Cable companies have been raping people for decades. If they would let me pay for the channels I use, I'd stay away from things like this. I don't need lifetime, oprah, and other crap channels like that. I literally watch the same 15 or less channels.dakshdar wrote:I don't really get why people think that stuff is ok.
Re: Cell Phones and Tech Shit
Cable has been charging a price that people have been willing to pay for decades, why is that their fault? The market dictates the price. And because they made money off you in the past, it's cool to steal it now?GeorgesGoons wrote:Why is it not okay? Cable companies have been raping people for decades. I'm no saint, I'll still find streams of things now and then. But I also acknowledge that it is absolutely wrong ethically

Cable/satelite is really the only option as the local channels do not have enough content.Weasel wrote:Cable has been charging a price that people have been willing to pay for decades, why is that their fault? I know it is wrong ethically, and I am fine with it. If I could figure out a way to screw the cell phone companies as well I would. Probably my two least favorite "necessities" in life.
Re: Cell Phones and Tech Shit
Just saying it's wrong ethically is really dancing around the reality of it.
This isn't different than walking into a store, taking something, and walking out without paying.
People are only "ok" with this because the chance of repercussions is much lower.
You're going to pay per month for this illegal service. There are multiple online cable services now (YouTube, Sling, Vue) that come in at barely more than you're paying.

Re: Cell Phones and Tech Shit
Dak, you've legit never streamed a single thing, not one event online before?
Re: Cell Phones and Tech Shit
I have in the past but I no longer believe it's acceptable.
Not that it makes it truly different, but it was also never wholesale acquisition of content on this level. Maybe a dozen out of market NFL games over several years. Not subscription services, movies, cable packages.
Again, still wrong and in reality indefensible.

Re: Cell Phones and Tech Shit
What was your reasoning in the past for it being different than walking into a store and stealing a physical item?dakshdar wrote:I have in the past but I no longer believe it's acceptable.
Re: Cell Phones and Tech Shit
There isn't one. It was wrong then and it's wrong now. It's why I don't do it anymore.
Re: Cell Phones and Tech Shit
Maybe it's not right, but I also feel that there's a level to things.
If I'm driving to work and I'm on a normal surface street where the speed limit is 35, and there's cars doing 40, is that all that concerning? Not really. Someone's driving down that same street at 70 though, that's definitely not good and something should be done to stop it.
If you told me you use an app to stream an LSU game 3 or 4 times a year because you can't get it without buying a satellite dish and subscribing to some package deal, I will understand what your saying. It's wrong, but I get it and I'm going to think in my head "Not a big deal" despite that. You're the guy doing 40 in at 35.
But if you tell me that you are streaming content from dozens of online providers just because you don't like the system of prices they have set up and it's hundreds of dollars a month of content, that's the guy driving 70.
Again, this is finding shades of grey in something that's really black and white (stealing), but that's the reality of what we do in life.

Re: Cell Phones and Tech Shit
You did it in the past and no matter if you steal a piece of candy or a tv from Walmart, you are just as guilty.
Yes, there are levels as stealing candy or a tv are not grand theft, but they are still punishable.
Same as your doing 40 in a 35 as opposed to doing 70, they are both speeding and punishable.
I get that doing 70 is wreckless operation so it will carry additional charges.

Yes. Luckily, the past does not prevent us from changing and espousing a stance where we encourage others that they too can change or avoid those things which we were once guilty of.
