2062 Spitters Preview

Post by DRiccio21 »

2061 was the first year in about a decade the Spitters put pressure on their players to step it up and be a legitimate contender again, the team made some high priced acquisitions and traded all their minor league options to fill holes to make the playoff run and the team suffered one of the most disappointing seasons in franchise history. An early season injury to star acquisition Roberto Moreno seemed to take the air out of the teams sail after a hot start. 2062, the team returns basically the exact same team, however a late season managerial change last year will put a new face in the dugout to start 2062. The team is hoping this change can spark some life into a team that desperately needs it.

Staff:

1) Roberto Moreno, 31. L -- Coming off a season ending injury, the team is hoping he can return to form but we realistically expect there is a chance he might be delegated to his old role as a reliever if his arm can't hold up with the elevated work load.

2) Julio Rincon, 31, R -- The Knuckleballer had one of his best seasons in 2061 with a 143 ERA+ in 170 ip. If he can stay healthy, he's a very capable top of the rotation arm.

3) Tom Hensley, 31, R -- The big man continued to show he's a viable SP in this league with 200 ip last season. He had a regression from his stellar 2060 season but the team still feels comfortable with his spot in the rotation.

4) Alfonso Medina, 30, R -- The former #1 pick was a pet project for the Spitters brass and they hoped they could get his potential to shine in a better situation, that didn't happen as he had a quite dreadful 2061 season. If he doesn't shape up early on he could be leaped in the rotation.

5) Tim St. John, 29, L -- St John pitched way above his potential in 2060 and had a regression to his normal self in 2061. He is a steady lefty who will get a shot either as a long reliever or the #5.

Jon Marquardt, Jim Foster, Ruben Perez -- all 3 of these guys are vying for the 4th and 5th spots and will have some sort of a role between late inning work or getting back into the rotation.

Lineup -

1) Luis Torres, 28, L, LF -- 200 hits, 100 runs, 60 sb's... steady as they come at the top of the lineup
2) Tadiyuki Kobayashi, 27, R, 2b -- Kobayashi won another gold glove but his bat didn't make the leap we hoped for after his breakout in 2060. Hoping we can at least get him back to the 2060 form at the plate.
3) Kel Sampson, 26, S, 1b/DH -- Sampson is one of the better hitters to ever wear the baby blue and black. 35 hr's 100 rbi's 900+ OPS consistency in a team that needs his pop.
4) Oliver Garcia, 33, L, RF -- Garcia never matched his pre contract season but he has found his niche as a star vs RHP. He smashed 26 HR's in a lighter work load last year and the team feels comfortable using him in the platoon while Pedro Flores continues to progress.
5) John Becker, 25, L, 1b/DH -- Becker is the other half of the Sampson/Becker bash brother combo. So far he's proven to be a more disciplined hitter with a better eye but we'd like to see him continue to progress with his power in 2062.
6) Jason Riley, 22, R, 3b -- Riley wasn't ready and was thrown to the wolves in 2061 and early struggles sent him back to AAA where he polished his stroke. After he was called back up he started to show his signs of greatness. Expecting huge things from him this season as he matures.
7) Jiro Morita, 28 R, C -- Morita is a above average catcher with some pop in his bat. He flashes periods of high upside.
8) Soh Yamamoto, 33, L, SS -- Left handed hitting SS brought some consistency to the position. Not a world beater but a solid option on the last year of his contract.
9) Carlos Gonzalez/Jose Flores, CF -- 2 Defensive wizards in CF. Both will get chances to show they are capable ML'ers until a better option comes around.

Overall the team sees similar potential in 2062 but given the thud of a season last year our hopes are a bit dimmer. Health is always a concern for every team but this team lacks the depth to take on any major injuries. The other big issue that hurt in 2061 was the bullpen, the team inexplicably didn't address that at all and will roll with the same arms late in games. Overall, an AL East title is the goal but making the playoffs at all would be considered a successful season.

prediction -- 89-73

Always loves the previews my AL Beast brother.

Hoping to hang around with the Spitters this season and be a middling squad.

Can we put the beast to bed? 3 of the past 5 ALCS champions have come from the west and the past 4 World Series champs have come from the NL Beast

Good write up Dave
